Need opinions (Enkei ZR-1, '91 SS)

Post by Fkyx »

Hey everyone. I've lined up a purchase for a nice red '91 SS... and I want to make her look good on the streets since the previous owner set her up to be good on the track/dirt. So I've been looking around for wheels... and I fell in love with these Enkei ZR-1s.

They're nice and light, too. 17x7.5+50, and I can bundle them with some good 215/50/17 rubbers for just over a grand... which is a sweet deal for a college student. :P

This is what they look like:

...and here's my future baby in all her glory (and previous owner):

Unfortunately, this is the only exterior photo I have access to. The other photo is of the engine bay. I'm really taking a leap of faith buying this car blind, but I don't think I'll be disappointed. I'm confident if he goes autocrossing with it, he's taken care of it.

Your opinions would be very well appreciated... and if you think the wheel/tire combo will rub, let me know. As far as I know, the previous owner has swapped out the suspension, but I can't remember what he's replaced the stockers with.

Thanks! :)

since the link you had wasn't correct, i figured i'd help you out.

you may want to look around if your planning on spending $1k on wheels and tires. sometimes you can find some sweet deals second-hand. i had a set of silver SSR comps that i got for $400 shipped in mint condition for my celica (16x7, 11lbs/each).

i think the 5zigen Fn01r-c (bronze) would look better on the car and they are 3 pounds lighter than the enkei.

If I were you I'd just find a set of used 17x7 wrx wheels and tires locally for like $450.

Or just buy rotas.

Price aside, though, do you think the wheels will look good? Everyone seems to have WRX wheels around here, and I don't want to be part of that everyone, if you know what I mean. And Enkei is just such a sweet name for a company.

well, enkies are good wheels, and high quality for the price. they look good, a little flashy for my tastes though.

im personally going to be powdercoating the stock 94 wheels (i haven't decided the color yet) and putting azeinis or RS-2's on there next summer. then if i run accross a good deal on some oem subaru alloy's with some good tires, i'll toss those on as winter wheels.

I'm still a tad concerned whether or not they'll rub. Edge Racing only stocks 17x7.5 wheels and bundles them with 215/50/17 tires. I have the option to bundle with other tire sizes, though. I think I remember the owner mentioning LEDA suspension upgrades, by the way.

well, if they rub, there's ways to fix that easily (most body shops and some tuning shops can roll fenders, and you can toss a 5mm spacer if you need to clear the strut)

i don't know what Leda is...

215/50-17 is quite a bit taller than stock and there's a pretty good chance those tires on those wheels won't clear the strut. Tossing a 5mm spacer drops the offset to 43 which will require a lot of fender rolling, new lugs if you want to do it right, and destroy wheel bearings.

oh, i just noticed the wall size.

if you do 50's the car will look retarded

look at 215/45 or 215/40's, 205/40 if your going to worry about fender clearance and tire bulge...

That's what I was thinking. Will 205/40 be safe with a 7.5 wide wheel?

I had 205/40-17's on 17x7.5 Rota's on my old Integra GSR Turbo back in '99.

The car made exactly 263WHP & could spin (burnout style) the tires through the top of 3rd gear which was 100+MPH @ 8100rpm on my 4.26 final drive tranny.

Other than tire wear due to the lack of traction (FWD) & broken axles I never had a problem with the tire/rim combo.

it's the right diameter and tirerack says to put 205/40-17 on a 7.5" rim, but it seems like a shame to put such a narrow tire on that big of a wheel.

I like the way the skinny tire looks on the wide rim, it looks slightly stretched over the rim - mild old school drift style.

As long as it's safe, I guess that's what I'll be looking at. :P
