Synchro wasted: Path of least resistance to clean shifting?

Post by BAKA »

Hello all,
I've got the grinding 3rd gear synchro problem on my 92 Legacy L 5spd. I've played with some of the different cocktails in the "Sticky: Grinding synchros..." thread and while my current cocktail (Royal Purple + GM Synchromesh) has helped, it still leaves something to be desired - I still crunch into 3rd gear sometimes. What is my "path of least resistance" to getting a clean shifting transmission? Junkyard used? Rebuilt? Have someone repair my transmission (which shifts perfectly otherwise). Cost isn't the only consideration, and I'd like to be reasonably sure I've got something that will go another 100K/miles... What would you expect to pay for your preferred option? The car's main mission is a daily driver, but I could potentially autox it a little. I'd probably go ahead an do a clutch job while in there. Any other work make sense when the trans is pulled? Thanks,
- BAKA

had a downshift synchro 2nd gear issue with mine, and "scotty's trans cocktail" worked great for mine---been 30k so far.

I'm normaly a fan of sticking with a know thing (instead of buying somebody else's problems). If the trans has no other issues I might tear it down and inspect it. If you dont find anything ugly, put it back together with new seals bearings and syncro hubs on at least the first three gears.

No matter how broke I am... I always seem to find two cents.
