I have a set of Uniroyal tiger paw Touring all season tires that has about 60% tread left, its not bad for a all season on dry and rain but it doesn't perform very well on the snow even with only about 1-2 inch of snow on my 94 SS. it started to slide when i turn into a corner about 30 kph. And my ABS won't even turn on when I brake hard at about 10 kph. the whole car just slides like its on butter untill it stops. At first I thought my ABS is broken but the indicator light shows no problem and at higher speed the ABS does come on. The real problem is that I'm planning to go up Whistler on Dec 19th and i'm wondering if a new set of snow tires are necessary or it is enough if i put a set of snow/ice chains on those all season tires?

I've never driven a car too much on snows so I don't have much of a clue ><. but it sure was fun doing donuts on my SS. too bad the tires are crap or I could go faster without much skidding

I don't know about chains, but if you're looking for a cheap decent winter tire, I've been pretty happy with the Winterforce M+S tires.

Is the car automatic? If so you can cheap out and use chains only on the front wheels without issue. Not so for the 5 speed though (you'll kill the center diff). If you really want something good consider the Blizzaks. They are the #1 most common snow tires on Subars (at least in the forums)

Blizzaks are definitely recommended.
though a little research and you can find an A/S that will do great in the snow too.
either that or just learn how to drive with what you have. AWD may inspire confidence, but it also tends to advise stupidity.

Although not a snow tire I will HIGHLY recommend Dunlop Sport A2 as a great all around tire. They have dry better traction than most summer tires and better snow traction than most all seasons (thats not saying much I know). They also have pretty stiff sidewalls, great treadwear and are easy to find

awsome, thanks for the input guys i've looked around at some blizzaks at local tire shop they seem very good at a decent price. i'll probably put those on before going on the mountain.
