scored anawd 5spd wagon---cheap. wanna convert my 2wd to awd. i believe this is what i need: trans/case,mounts and carrier, rear shaft, diff, rear axles, struts and knuckles, and gas tank. are there any electrical controls to the t-case? i was told the t-case is all mechanical with a viscous coupler. are these couplers known to go bad?
my question was mainly about possible electrical issues with the swap. i guess my question was answered in another thread. i guess the 5mt awd will not require any additional wiring than my 5mt fwd. i was just looking for confirmation with that.
thanks a lot guys. my only awd before now was an auto. just confirming that the 5mt didn't have electrical t-case controls that i'd have to contend with.
There are many non US 5 speed manual that have electrical center differentials. Also my 1990 XT6 had a locking center differential that was electronic.
If you get your 5 speed from any US legacy/impreza you will be fine assuming you match the final drive ratio to your rear differential.
i run a very busy 1-man repair shop, and have kids,so my time is limited. planning on pulling parts from donor on saturday. my new clutch shuold be here monday-ups. next saturday i'll have time for swapping my 2wd to 4wd. i'll post back after that.
well, she's done. only one stumble i didn't plan on----the shifters are different. the awd sits closer up to the body to accomodate the driveshaft. the shifter posts are also styled different. now the rear sits a little higher since the donor car was a wagon. the fender to tire clearence is about equal to the front. took about 7 hours total---not hurrying. thanks to all for your help.
