calling CO residents

Post by dirtyhandssubaru555 »

im looking to move some where new and out of this state(washington). i have lived here all my life, 21 years and to say the least its lames as hell here. how are the gun laws? i like my guns. crime? im looking for a medium sized town 80,00 to 100,00 population. i paint house, been doing it for almost 7 years now, seen lots of good jobs on cregslist. how is the local autocross, rallycross, rally scene? what cities should i stay away from or what parts of what towns? i need snow, lots of it! how are the season? im sure winter is intense from what i saw when i as in steamboat 8 or 9 years ago
my girlfriend finaly found out that i spent more money and time on my car then her. she was kind pist to say the least.

CO is a bit different than western WA. that's actually the move I made. its not too different from wenatchee.
the weather is much more to my liking in front range CO. winters are windy, cold and dry unless it snows. last year there was a huge blizzard. you will have periods where it will be 50* and sunny in january or it can be -5 during the day. the summers are pretty damn hot, mostly high 80's and up. there is a bit of a monsoon as well.
a ccw is pretty easy to get here as far as I know. I get the feeling there are quite a few gun people. not something I'm into.
crime is pretty low from what I can tell. however the police presence is uncomfortably high.
the powder is light when there is any and there can be droughts. there are good resorts and plenty of backcountry that is fucking insane. WA powder days can be titties but CO has the really light snow that comes with cold temps.
there is a pretty good rallycross scene and some talented drivers. there is also ice racing. i have no clue about autocross but it does exist.
I don't really know the situation with painting but there are generally plenty of jobs in the construction industry here.
boulder is alright but you have a lot of trust fund hippies and attitude. a bit expensive housing wise. I'd skip it. Ft. Collins is a pretty mellow place with awesome local beer and cheaper rent than boulder, but further from the skiing. some of the outlying communities of denver are supposed to be good and denver itself is cool. durango is awesome but housing can be expensive.
if you like the outdoors it would be a good move. also consider maybe utah and new mexico.

ive lived in SW denver most of my life, and im now living in fort collins. denver is fun, but too big for me. i like fort collins alot better.

i think colorado has more sunny days or something along those lines than any other state. the summers in the mountains are great. its kinda dry out here, which i like, but it will take some getting use to if your use to humidity. as far as your other questions, crime is relitivly low in most parts of colorado. there are certain parts of denver, mostly the east side like aurora, that are kinda gheto, but nothing like huge cities like new york and LA. Autox is huge in colorado, and you'll have some stiff competition. there is also rally cross, and ice racing in the winter.

there can be lots of snow, but it will *normally* melt off kinda quickly. last winter was a freak though, since we had almost three consecutive months of snow. this winter hasn't been too bad so far, with only one larger storm. if you have the right tires on a good car, you'll be fine. i had perelli winter tires on my alltrac, and i drove it everyday though out all those billzards last year, and loved it

the best part is if im bored, i can pick a dozen windy mountain roads to go blast though that are within an hour drive at least. my favorite is the deckers road from colorado springs to conifer. that road on a dry august afternoon is addicting. there is also AWDpirates, which is a large local forum of car enthusiast, mostly subarus though. they do meets and cruses every once in awhile too.

if it hardly ever snow, how come all the ski resorts? i ski and snowmoble, i hike, mountain. i do like sunny days and dryer weather, wenatchee is considered a desert. good bars, brew pubs, are good. were can i find a larger groups of younger people? im 21. i do need nice dirt roads to go blast on a sunday afternoon. i don't have a problem with hippies but if there any thing like the guy at my work that is a trust found kid, forget them! i think i need to come visit. what about rivers and swimming, bridges to jump off along with cliffs and what not?
my girlfriend finaly found out that i spent more money and time on my car then her. she was kind pist to say the least.

its a two step launch control anti-lag. im guessing its something similar to the AEM ignition based anti-lag setup. air injection set ups tend to be MUCH more noisy. see if you can find any ST205 anti lag videos, since some came with anti-lag as a factory option for WRC rules. i just thought the video of them drag racing a car on a dyno was awesome

hmm, i though i posted a second reply. anyways, there are resivors for cliff jumping and lots of outdoor rec all around denver and in the mountains. it snows, but not as much in the city as in the mountains. our ski resorts are awesome, and on a good powder day its almost heaven up there. there are also lots of local breweries in colorado in both the moutains and the front range area. New Belgium, Breckenridge brewery, left hand, boulder brewery, etc.

if you don't like hippies, just don't go to boulder. i kinda like boulder, but there is something about boulder and CU that makes it a hippy kinda town.

lots of sweet rivers. the poudre has some BIG scary cliffs to jump off. like 60+ into 10' wide and 12' deep. nuts.
Its not that it never snows here, it just doesnt snow almost every day for a month at a time like WA and you don't find waist deep pow inbounds at a resort like you could at stevens or baker. the backcountry is another story. I ride a lot of backcountry at berthoud pass and cameron pass(sometimes there is even a decent bootpack) and you can get some serious face shots there. every now and then you can get a powder day inbounds somewhere. they do make a lot of snow. I like winter park/mary jane if it has been dumping and copper mtn. if it hasnt(stashes 8) )
nothing wrong with hippies in my book, theyre generally better people than yuppies and rednecks.

i would like to be within 45 minutes to an hours from the nearest resort. i wouldnt mind being like 20 to 30 minutes from a fare sized town, maybe further up in the hills. i love back counrty skiing and thats what i do most not always legit backcounrty skiing and sometime unsafe. i like 60foot cliffs  ! any good strip clubs, night clubs?

I live maybe 20 mins from the nearest ski resort. But it's not as nice as the ones farther west in the mountains. Night clubs and strip clubs would be best found in Denver.

I know the call of the b/c is strong but is your life or your buddy's life really worth not carrying avy gear and having a little training? even avalanche cord is better than nothing. if you stay alive you can drink beers at the end of the day. I call BS on the 60 footers too, lets see some pics. :P

i don't care about nice ski resorts to say, i kind of like smaller operations. i worked at alpental(snquliame). i usally try not to endanger othe people, so i go by myself and i know thats a bad idea also. avy gear cost so much tho.

Well duh. I'm here aren't I?

To add to what has been said, you sound like the kind of guy that would like a town like Coinifer, Evergreen or Fairplay. The problem with either of them is you will need to commute east towards the more populated areas to find work. But they are both less than an hour from ski resorts and hwy 285 access some of the smaller more mom and pop type resorts with nice powder stashes.

As for backcountry skiing? We've got one of the most dangerous backcountries in the nation. We are consistently in the top five numbers of avalanche deaths per year even though many of them are snowmobilers. The trick is you cannot ski backcountry in the dead of winter. The snowpack doesn't truly start to consolidate and set up until March or so. Just look at the windslab that slid yesterday on the interstate. It's sketchy as hell in our backcountry right now. Cliff jumping isn't stupid or dangerous. Skiing windblown slab in Jan. in Colorado is stupid and deadly...

There's a huge and naitonally competitive auto-x scene. It's bigger down further south towards Colorado Springs. That's also where the last of our tracks is located, though that's set to change in a year or two.

I think that's all I've got to add for now...
