headlight bulb replacement

Post by kleinkid »

For my '91, how about the 9004/HB1 Hella 100/80w Xenon Hella High Performance Xenon Blue? Currently I have the Sylvania Ultra for Ultra Night Vision 65/45, stock lenses, but polished. At freeway speeds at night you just about outdrive the light. I know the 100/80 is more than stock, just don't want to blind oncoming traffic or involve the cops. Should I get them? $32.63/pair at www.rallylights.com

That's nice. Anyone have any comments about the Hella bulbs I am referring to?

If they're the blue tinted ones than I would beware... They make it harder to see.

They have a blue coating. They got to be bright at 100/80w, though.

dont forget that they overheat from getting so damn hot and then the bulb explodes inside your headlight and leaves a smokey residue inside which you need to take the entire lense off to clean. happened to me TWICE! when I was a ricer with my civic ;)

More light is not going to fix the problem. Pre-facelift headlights just have a useless beam pattern. If you put in overwattage bulbs and manage not to melt the wiring, reflectors, lenses, or bulb holders, you still won't end up with better seeing distance, sadly. Those dumb aftermarket HID hackjobs make that situation even worse.

This has been covered before. The only option if you want to not be overdriving your lights at highway speed is to get different lights. Depending on how much work you want to do, how much money you want to spend, and your access to resources, your three best options are:

- Get European-market lights.
- Swap to a post-facelift front end.
- Come up with some kind of custom headlight assembly using parts designed to be good headlights.

I would say just do the glass headlight option...I have them and they are worth every penny!

Agreed, I just installed EDMs in my ’91, the difference is… well… night and day. :) The pre-face lights use the 9000 series bulbs with an external shield and a poor reflector. Here is a pic of my stock light pattern just after I wet sanded, polished and upgraded the bulbs… still crappy.
