Grimmspeed - External Wastegate Up Pipe w/ TIAL 38mm Waste
Would this work on our cars?
http://www.grimmspeed.com/catalog/produ ... 8cieud5ac5
WHAT IS IT?
An external wastegate allows the exhaust gases to be diverted prior to entering the turbo. Dumping the exhaust gas prior to the turbo helps with boost control, maintains boost longer in the rpm range, and extends the life of your turbo. Our pipe is fully built stainless steel EWG Up pipe and stainless steel dump tube for turbo Subarus. Monster thick SS flanges that will not warp. We have added a flex section which extends the life of the product and will lead to less exhaust leaks because the pipe can flex vs. warping the flanges in a non-flex setup(inturn creating leaks).
WHY DO YOU NEED IT?
Reason for switching to an EWG setup includes:
* Quicker turbo spool by allowing the exhaust gas to exit pre-turbo. There is alot of turbulence in the stock turbo at the internal wastegate so by moving the wastegate out of the turbo you get rid of this nasty turbulence thus improving the effiecency of the turbo as well.
* More efficient wastegate design that has a bigger diameter than stock allowing for the exhaust gas to be released quicker.
* Hold peak boost longer. This allows you to run a lower peak boost and increase HP at the same time.
* Much larger than the stock internal wastegate
* No more boost creep...EVER!
GAINS?
Users should expect gains in the 15-40hp range when tuned for the EWG setup.

awsome. now if they could make one with a t3 flang and rotated mount i would buy it asap.

The GrimmSpeed Uppipe fits on our cars perfectly. I installed one earlier this fall. The EWG/UP is just a GrimmSpeed Uppipe with a Wastegate flange and a dumptube.
From what I could tell when I was mucking around putting the UP in there should be enough room for the Dump Tube. After that you can either plumb the dump back in to the exhaust or have a very mean-sounding car with an open dump.
On a side-note: I'd highly recommend GS products and work. I live right down the road from them, know the owner and have toured the shop a number of times. Mr. Grimm goes to great lengths to only offer really high-quality products and services.

Technical question. Our cars run like crap with atmospheric BOV up by the IC. Run rich/lean? I forget... Would the BOV on the uppipe avoid the problem and give us the option of running aftermarket BOV, higher boost levels and enjoy all that fun noise?...

Uh, yeah....hum best retract that one. I was confused.
So why is is divorced wastegate so desirable? I know I want one...

I'n all vf-turbos, the wastegate is a little flap in the exhaust housing. When you hit a certain boost, the flap opens to divert exhaust gasses past the turbine, thus limiting boost. While this works great, it can lead to
A. boost creep
B. less boost than desired.(kinda funny)
C. cracks in the turbo(eg,. vf-39)
A, can be resolved by porting the wastegate.
B, can be solved by reduction in turbulance of exhaust flow.
C, can be solved by welding the existing wastegate shut(creating a structural point) and relocating the wastgate to another location. Which, solves all the other problems.
There you go, wastegates 101. I'm drunk, and about to get la...oh... peace, my lady beckons.

Kickin' it old-school.
Excellent thanks!
On that list can you define boost creep? I've heard of BC for years and never experienced it and its symptoms are never called out - but its bad, bad, bad...
Also, wonder if all of the above list can apply to the TD turbos...TD05 specifically.

That list applies to any turbo with an internal wastegate.
Boost creep is when you are making more boost than what you have your boost control system set to. It's essentially overboosting, and it happens because the tiny internal wastegates just cant flow enough gasses to keep boost set.
Lets say you have your car set to run 18 psi. So you'd see 18 psi, untill the wastegate couldnt flow anymore, and then you would see 20 psi, which could throw your tune off.

I "need" a divorced wastegate then but don't want to delay my turbo swap saving for it.
Wonder if buying a Tial valve and downpipe and having a mufflershop weld up something would be much of a savings? I have a good muffler guy and there's a coatings place here that's amazing.
Supose I could do this for $XXX? Copying the above design?...
