How would I know if the engine in my 1994 Legacy Sedan is Dohc or Sohc?
Is there like something I could have a look at it? I think the engine is an ej20.
Thanks.

I take it the engine currently in your car is not the original?
If it is the original and you do not have a turbo model then you have a SOHC Phase I EJ22E.
If it is not the original engine then you should be able to look at the front of the timing belt covers and see how many indentions are one the end of the motor. If you only see one large indention per side then it's SOHC. If you have two large indentions per side, one directly above the other, then it's DOHC.
Hope this helps and welcome to the BBS.

I believe the engine int he car is the original, it was imported from Japan and is in New Zealand where I live currently.
I'm not quite sure what you were talking about with the indentations as I dont know much about engines, but I am certain the engine is an ej20 as on the engine itself it says ej20, also on the airfilter it says Subaru ej20 and on the bagde under the "hood" the engine type says: "EJ20EDAAGE"
Would these indentations be like on the sides of the engine? how large would they be?
Thanks.

Look at the head covers. There is a chance you have a 2.0 NA DOHC, cause they exist.
Anyway, the cam gear covers (the head covers which hide the timing belt) will LOOK like it either has a single or dual cam underneath it. Cause its "round" if its single, and "double round" if dual.
