1994 2.2T Project Car

Post by traskw »

I just purchased a 1994 Turbo Legacy as a project car (So I'd leave my 2005 LGT light on mods). I have a $2008 budget for the Grassroots Motorsports competition next October. I have $600 into the car which has 121,000 miles.

I have a TD04 coming with 10K miles ($100), I have a front mount ($100) Godspeed and extra piping to plumb for the intake and FMIC. I have two manual boost controllers ($15), one for boost one to adjust the limit for fuel cut.

The plan is to use the 520cc side feed injectors off of my 05 LGT when I upgrade them. I may also upgrade the 05 fuel rail, but not sure. (I also have a 92 NA fuel rail if needed and a 97 Fuel rail off of a 2.5 NA.

I understand that the stock ecu will not handle injectors this size. I also plan on upgrading to a walbro pump, upgrading the fuel pressure regulator, adjusting it down for idle and then use a FMU to adjust for higher boost when on throttle.

Does that seem a sound approach?

Can I use the stock (94) fuel rail with the 520cc side feed injectors?

Ideas on the use of the TD04?

The fuel rails off your 05 won't fit your 94's intake manifold.

Are the 05's injectors the same basic shape as the new age STi's injectors? If so, they'll fit the 92 NA raul.

But to get 520 cc/min injectors to flow similar to the stock injectors you'll need to reduce fuel pressure down to like 20 psi; that may adversely affect fuel atomization.

You might find that a high-pressure pump and an FMU work fine without an injector upgrade. That's more or less what I'm doing with my TD05 and AWIC.

What HP are you getting out of that set-up? The 255lph Walbro should allow for more than adequate pressure, correct? 1:3 FMU? Will the Walbro overpower the stock fuel controller?

I don't have an estimate for how much power I'm producing. I do know the air/fuel ratio, last I measured it, was about 10.5:1 at 18 psi.

I'm using a pump from a MkIV Supra Turbo, but a high-pressure 255lph Walbro pump should be sufficient, yes.

I don't know the rise ratio of my FMU, but it's pretty low. I'm using a bleed valve on the boost reference line to adjust the amount of enrichment.

Take a look here:

I read that post already. Good info. What type of bleed valve are you using? Ball type that opens at a certain boost or simple pressure bleed?

The TD05 larger than the TD04, correct? I'm more familar with the VF series turbos. That's your only fuel mods? Are you using the stock intake or an adapter and cone filter?

It's just a few bucks' worth of stuff from the hardware store. A tee, a restrictor, a few barb fittings, and a needle valve.

I don't know whether you mean a ball-and-spring valve like some boost controllers or a ball valve used to control flow, but in either case, that type of valve is not appropriate for this purpose.

Those GRM $200x budget competition guys are a pretty sneaky group (V8 Datsun 510 that ran 10's on the 1/4 mile, & handled (once the tires/rims were changed)).....

If you want to compete I think you'll need more than a TD04 or TD05.
? - Holset, or a Chinese $150 T3/T4e from ebay on a modded stock up-pipe (a Free GT35r would be bice).

+1 on the Walbro & Low ratio FMU (3:1) taking care of fueling on stock injectors & ECU.

The car will have to be put on a major diet as well but this sounds like an interesting project.

The TD04 was cheap, spools fast enough for autocross, and I've seen some success on a NA to turbo build were a guy had his 97 impreza auto in the 13's with one. Most of the cars are slower than that at the GRM 200* competition with the exception of the V8 datsuns and the rolled C4 corvettes. A guy I know had a good point, they should require the competitor to be willing to sell their cars for $2000 and see what shows up. I may be able to sell myself the VF40 in my 05 when I upgrade, but I doubt I'd do that before October.

I have incoming: FMIC & piping, TD04, BOV adapter, stainless brake lines, lightened flywheel, and cobalt boost gauge.

I have on hand a short throw assembly from a later subaru, whiteline springs that need some TLC, a LGT BOV, and some other various parts.

Struts, I was thinking of the KYB AGX or Monroe Sensi-Track
The monroe are cheaper, but the agx are adjustable.

I'll lighten the car were I can (remove rear seats, etc. Not sure if I want to strip the carpeting and road dampening material out as I will drive this car during the winter.)

The car came with a set of winter tires and a set of Bridgestone Pole Positions.

Not sure if I should count on the Bridgestones, thinking of DOT competition tires, which I should be able to squeeze into the budget.

My goal is to run in the 13's, with enough low end spool to muscle around the autocross. I've started detailing the interior, I removed the fur from the speaker covers, wire brushed them and painted them semi-gloss black with clear satin overcoat. It looks a lot better. I've disassembled most for the dash and shifter surround to give it a thorough cleaning. I have a Subaru 6-disc I plan on adapting for the radio. Not sure on paint, the car was silver, but the prior owner had it painted red. It looks like the factory color, anyone know what the red was called for those years?

Better than the Sens-a-Trac shocks might be a takeoff suspension from a 2004 STi.

By "red" do you mean "maroon?" Cuz that would be Winestone.

No, bright red. I'm leaning toward the AGX.

Ah. Then either Cranberry or Crimson:

Yeah, AGXes would be better. And they, like the STi struts, would be red, like your car. =)

I believe it may be rio red, which was available on the 91 SS. Anyone have pictures of that color?

Search for "rio red" in the Picture and Multimedia Gallery forum.

If you can snap a pic of the car we could tell you in half a sec what color it is. Rio Red was absolutely not a stock 94 color. search for posts made by jake15 in the pic and multimedia section to see a pic of rio red.

If you have a '94 SS you have Crimson Red Pearl - I have the same year & color....

If your goal is 13's the TD04 should get you there, WRX's & Foresters are running high 12's on TD04s.

You have a good point re. selling the car for $2K once the competition is over.
They should @ least group the cars into categories (? on weight, sedan vs coupe, displacement...).

+1 for AGXs.

The car was painted by the prior owner, it may not even be a Subaru Red, it was originally silver.

The 12's would be even better, but I don't need to be there to place in the top 10 as long as I do well enough in the other two categories.

OK - ? what color it is then.

If you are going to use a TD04 I'm not sure you'll NEED a FMU with the stock injectors/Walbro as it is just slightly bigger than the VF11.

I'd spend an hour or so porting the turbo ext. & comp. housings before you put the TD04 on.

I strongly doubt you will crack the 13s with a TD04 on a stock EJ22T...

I have a VF8 on my stock 2.2t and I have yet to crack the 13s...and it is a far larger turbo

Does your car have a full interior? My car won't. 13's is the goal, I think I can get there, I've seen a TD04 take a automatic 2.5 NA into the 13's. It was a base white impreza, used to run up at the New England track. A technician I used to work with built it with less than $500 in parts.

Yes...my car does have full interior...but I still don't think that taking out 100lbs of interior stuff will get you into the 13s

These boards never change, there's still someone willing to flame their two cents in rather then lend a hand. I said it was my goal, I didn't ask for your flaming negativity. If you have something positive to contribute; feel free to share.

Can you swap the side and rear (or at least the sides) glass with acrylic/polycarbonate? That would save some decent weight.

I could get my hands on a VF39 if I had to, not sure the 2.2T would be able to breath that deep, but as I've said, I've seen someone start with less and get in the 13's with a TD04. I have more experience with the newer turbo's, so I came here for advise. It's not my daily driver, so I'm willing to go a little further with it down the drag strip (race gas and higher boost) and then back off the boost for the autocross.

Who knows. if anything it will be a learning experience.
