Well, the new car's tranny is going...
I was at a stop sign making a right turn and I didnt drop it, but didnt start off gently... And I heard a nasty noise... And now whenever in first I get a really shitty grinding sound.
It still drives in first, but with a Crunchy Grinding noise... NOT GOOD!
There is the normal 1st gear whine with a crunch every 1/4 second.
Thankfully I have a spare turbo tranny to swap in it.
Since it still drives and all that I figured I just striped a tooth of the gear.
So I guess I have a weekend project!
Well, a stock tranny with 214XXX miles was bound to go any time... just a matter of when.

Yeah, sounds like 1st gear tanked on ya. Good thing you have a spare to throw in it.

I really would have rather held on to the spare a little bit longer... Only had the new car for about 3 weeks... Dammit!dropdfocus wrote:Yeah, sounds like 1st gear tanked on ya. Good thing you have a spare to throw in it.

Probably a good idea...asc_up wrote:I'd suggest using the tranny until it completely craps out and rebuild the spare. That way you can have a nearly 'new' transmission in there.
I'll probably leave the tranny in there... But I definitely need to pull the spare out of the wrecked car.
BUT I doubt I could rebuild the spare (lack of know-how)

I would think long and hard about continuing to drive on that transmission. I have first hand expiriance that a single sheared tooth can lock up a driveline if it falls into the wrong place.
My sister would likely not be here today if she had spun out into traffic instead of towards the center divider when it happened to her.

I might... If Andy is too busy to lend a hand... Since he successfully completed a Auto to Manual swap i trust him... Just need to find the time!555BCTurbo wrote:You might wanna just pay Dale to do the swap...
If you haven't done a tranny job in a car before...these are not a good one to start on...
And no... I havent done a tranny job... I havent done a lot on these things. I'm kinda learning as I go... And, sad to say, fumbling my way though...
But Thankfully... There is Legacy Central to guide me!!

Yessir...
If you want to make a 'lil bit of money...my girlfriend needs all of the 5mt swap parts for her SS...
So like the front half of the driveline, tranny crossmembers, and shift linkage would be needed...from your parts car obviously...

Dont let these well meaning advisor's scare you out of doing it yourself to save some cash. DEFINITELY READ everything you can in this forum on the subject. I found more than enough of the right information to pull my tranny for a clutch swap and it was my first time dropping a driveline and transmission on a AWD car. Some points you should consider: You will need an extra hand, you will need to remove the pivot rod for the clutch fork from the outside of the housing (that little mistake cost me a pulled back muscle and a day and a half of work), I would STRONGLY advise you to borrow or rent a tranny jack. You can drop it without one but your back and knees and helper will thank you if you do it the easy way. And just make sure, as it is your first time, that you review each step prior to doing it, double check your work as you go and make a final check list to be absolutely certain that you did not forget to torque a bolt or grease an shaft seal or what ever other small little thing you could miss in the rush to get done. You can very realistically do this in a weekend, prep friday, pull sat, throw on the new one sunday, but if you have no problems you could really do it in one day baring any freaky problems. If you have any issues at all feel free to email me or pm or call as Ive just done this myself not too long ago and since youve got it open you may want to take some of that cash you saved and pick up a new clutch to save yourself the time down the road.

There is a stage 2 clutch in the car right now that has less than 2000 miles on it... So I ought to be good on a clutch...
