I believe early models had a warning light on the dash that warned the driver when one of the brake lights had burnt out.

wow! that's a brilliant idea. You know how many cars I see where both tail lights are burnt out. Not Subaru's though. Maybe some newer ones but never a older subaru.

Yeah, I believe the 90-91 MY's had the stop lamp indicator on the dash.

I'd check all your bulbs on both sides, and the 3rd brake light. Have someone step on the brakes while you look at the brake lamps to try and determine which one is out.

my 91 sedan has the stop light lamp in it. it took me quite a long time to figure out what it meant i had to look it up in the manual. its not the bulb because sometimes it works and sometimes it doesnt. i checked the bulb but its good.

pretty handy dandy warning light if ya ask me

Haha I literally just had this problem.

I turned on my lights and all of the tail lights seemed to be working. Then I had my friend hit the brakes and I found that the "high beam" that activates on one of the lights when the brakes are depressed was burnt out...

Then go to your local auto parts store and buy replacement bulbs for every brake light. It shouldn't cost you more than $12 and it'll probably fix your problem.

Yeah, mine has this as well. These cars hardly need it though, no bulbs lasted less than 10 years in mine. Most new cars on the other hand...

You probably have a marginal bulb. Replacing them should solve the problem.
