Any N/A clutch? 2.2 vs 2.5

Post by wind chaser »

Hey,ThreeEyedBandit, raised a question in another thread about running a clutch for a 2.5 with an n/a trans. I have searched to find the answer with no luck. I seem to remember some one here saying something about the 2.5 clutches having some issue with the 2.2 though.

I have been running an n/a trans in my T wagon since June. It slips quite easily. I think my disc was contaminated by the guy I had put it in, which contributed to the slipping. I should have grown a pair back then and done it myself and done it right. I recently lost the pilot bearing. I wouldn't be surprised if that same guy left in the original one that was in the used flywheel. I pulled the engine to get at it (have seals to replace also). This forces me to address the clutch again. So that raises the question again.

The discs may be the same. You can certainly find 2.5 clutch set ups with a 225mm diameter disc and 1inch x 24 teeth. That means the pressure plate diameter would be the same also, right? So, will the pressure plate's housing bolt pattern match up?

Here is the interesting part. In talking with Grip-Force and a local clutch builder, I have found that stock clamp loads for the n/a exedy pressure plate are 1000-1200 lbs for the 2.2 and about 10-15% higher for the 2.5. Clamp loads for the exedy stage 1 are listed at 1650 (their website) and for about $100 more ACT clamp loads are 1700-1750. It seems you aren't getting much more for the extra $100. I guess it all depends on your HP.

The 2x expensive ACT or even the exedy stage 1 might be overkill for me, but if I can get a stock 2.5 to work with that little extra clamp load, I think it will be worth it for the kind of driving I do.
I used to be full, but I'm finally MT !!

A quick search I did a while ago claimed that a 'generic' 99 2.5RS flywheel is the same as a early N/A Legacy and Imprezza. So what my plan is, I am going to get a KEP 6 puck clutch disc and try to find a 2.5RS pressure plate and see how this all works out. This is just a bit of info I have come up with in my little bit of searching around.

I just read somewhere on the Nabisco that the 2.5RS uses some sort of freak flywheel, which doesn't make and sence. So the searching continues.....
