Auto Tranny Filter

Looking at doing an ATF drain and refill in a couple months and picked up a filter for dirt cheap. I searched through my Haines manual and there is nothing in there about replacing this filter, does anyone know how it's done?
My best guess is that it is located in the pan that holds all the ATF. It also looks like there is just a gasket that seals that pan or maybe a liquid and gasket mix like the oil pan. Are there any other gaskets, o-rings, or seals that I might need? I'd hate to get it apart and not be able to put it back together without leaking like a sieve

theres a gasket for the pan, a o-ring for the filer
take the pan off and i believe there's 3 or 4 bolts that hold the filter, and there's 1 bolt holding a electrical connector and 2 bolts holding a pipe that have to be removed in order to the the filter out.
i just did this cause my tranny was having a fit,its not hard, its a fairly simple repair.

There is an external add-on filter on the frame rail near the battery. This is still more a screen type filter.
There is an internal screen filter as well inside the transmission.

Picking up on an old thread.
I have a question about my auto tranny.
92 L
211K
The cars runs good (a little hestitation now and then on take off), but in the winter (southeast Texas

) it takes 3 to 5 seconds before the transmission engages from P to D. Once it's warmed up, it's fine. No other shifting problems are noticed.
Now the questions:
Changing fluid is obvious, but should I change the filters too? Should I replace both tranny filters or just one? If just one, which?
Thanks in advance,
Chris

You can back rinse the internal trans screen. The external one I wouldn't worry about.
The issue you're experiencing is due to a check valve that is allowing the torque converter to drain. I'm not exactly sure where this valve is....but it's relatively common unfortunately.
Where in SE texas are you?

Josh,
Thanks for the reply. Looks like I'll do a TransX and a fluid change.
We've actually corresponded before. Last year I think. I live in Pearland.
Regards,
Chris

is there a part number available for the external filter. with as much grime on it, it's probably never been changed, and I plan on changing it.

There's a part # for the filter add-on kit. Replacing just the filter actually costs more then the kit.
Part # is 31099AA091
BTW, this thread has a lot of part #'s in it,

Not to mention I posted the parts catalog in the stuff you need to know forum as well.

thanks legacy777. Called the dealer today and they wanted $77 for the filter! No to mention $43 for a wiper arm, and $28 (not bad) for the lift handle. I found an online subie parts dealer (is there one recommended to use?) but still not much of a discount. Not like my Buick. I can get Delco parts for pretty much 1/2 off the dealer list price...

Go to the online catalog and type in the part #. That's the cheapest place I have found, and have been dealing with Jamie who runs the internet parts for many years.
