Piston prefference!?

Post by Imprezive »

So I'm planning out my engine build for this summer. Purely from a price standpoint I am thinking of just re-using the stock pistons depending on their condition when I pull them from my engine that has 250k miles on the clock.

But I don't know if I want to do that...

I've looked up Wiseco pistons, but they are $600 for a set, plus they or .020" over and would probably require different rings.

What other choices are there? Has anyone ran any different pistons?

I really just want to refresh my block so super performance isn't really a big deal to me.

The Wisecos come with rings iirc...

You could send your pistons to be cryo treated and just reinstall them...if you aren't going for big power this would probably work well for you.

If you pay $600 for a set of Wiseco's you are getting ripped off. I paid $439 + shipping. http://www.importperformanceparts.net/

And yeah, the Wiseco set comes with rings, pins, and circlips

I got new stock sized pistons from Crawford. They use ej22t blocks, but don't use the stock pistons. So they have a surplus. I bought new ones for pretty cheap. You'd have to call them and check on prices and what they have available.

I have heard CP pistons are lighter than the rest and spool the turbo more quickly. I bought a set of forged Wiseco's and yeah they were about $600 shipped, but that is overnight shipping to Alaska. They were the .040" overbore with rings and wrist pins. They are pretty heavy feeling too. So I am sure they will never ever break, but for a 300 HP car you could go lighter.

Hmmm, thanks for the info. I'll have to check with crawford and see what they've got.

I don't know how you guys are paying $600 for wisecos. You can get a custom set from CP or Arias for that.

As for a certain piston making a turbo spool faster than another is pure BS. A lighter piston may rev a little faster, but it is not going to move the gases that much different to make the turbo spool faster.

Because you can get Wiseco's off the shelf and if you want custom made it takes at least 2 weeks longer.

Less reciprocating/rotating mass means more horsepower. This is especially true for internal engine parts. Think about it. If the piston weighs more it takes more energy to push it down, more energy to stop and reverse it's direction. The weight of a piston is totally a leech on power even more so than a flywheel or something because at least the energy that is put into a flywheel to make it spin stays in the flywheel. With a piston it's wasted and just turned into extra friction and heat. Plus it's harder on the rods at high rpms and causes overall more vibration and stress on the engine. I think the Wiseco is more durable because it's heavier so it's probably appropriate for high boost, but if you want a high revving engine you might be better off choosing a lighter weight piston. It's ok though I can work with the Wiseco's. Their stronger so it just means that instead of raising the redline I can just add some more nitrous or something if I get to the point that I want more power.

As far as the lighter pistons go, I understand what you are saying. Yes the rods are stressed less, and the motor will rev faster and be smoother. What I'm saying is that the mass of the piston is not going to make the turbo spool up faster in relation to a particular RPM. The motor itself will get to that particular RPM sooner, but that threshold will still be there. Just like higher compression. You'll get to that RPM faster, but the spool isn't effected so much.

Higher compression exhaust pulses have more energy. It's why diesels can kick up a turbo faster.

Diesel is an entirely different ballgame. Since they live their life in knock, the exhaust pulses will have more energy since the mixture doesn't burn, it explodes.

i was just wondering if any fuel upgrades are nessesary when boring a car or will the ecu compensate for the need of more fuel?

I'm not sure that .04 liters will have a major effect on it. Or .08 liters if you are going .040 over

So I am considering a set of wiseco's. But will I have to buy new rods to fit the piston pins?

Cool! Wiseco's might make more sense, the cost difference will only be about $300 + what is costs to bore it out, since I wont need to buy piston rings...

If you are going with forged pistons, would it make sense to upgrade the rods as well?

Does anyone have an estimate on getting a block bored out for forged pistons?

Rods are already forged, unless you want to go with stronger/bigger rods.
