edm headlights

Post by kleinkid »

Got some EDM headlights with the electrical level adjusters. Couple of questions.
1. Can they be used without the electric leveler part hooked up?
2. City lights--looks like I need a connector and wire to plug into it. Where do you get power for them from?

Guess I'll try to find a stock switch for the electric leveler, then go from there for that function. I'll use the schematic from Josh for instructions.

City lights, just tap into the wiring for the corner lights.

city light pigtail?

Post by kleinkid »

Thanks, Josh. How about that two pin connector on the city lights. Do you know a source where I can get a pig tail to plug into that?

Update: found some two pin connectors at an auto parts store and will use them to replace the OE connectors.

Are those splice things that pinch the wires and fold shut, don't know their name, the way to tap into the corner light wires?

I don't particularly like those gator clips, but they will work.

I tapped into the corner lights using "fancy" gater clips. They are from 3M - and contain a dielectric gel inside a "pill" where the vampire connection is made. It should maintain a solid, corrosion free connection for quite some time.

I got them from the desk of a fellow engineer here at work, and I'm not sure where to source them otherwise... sorry
Perhaps a search on Mcmaster or Grainger would yield something.

installed, they work

Got the lights installed. I used weather proof heat shrink butt conectors to splice all wire ends and then covered those up with heat shrink tube. Did not use gator(vampire) clips. For the city lights, I cut the wires to the corner lights about 3" from the connectors for those, put a butt connector on each of those wires on the harness side, and stuffed the wire ends for the corner light connector and the connector going to the city light, into the other end, put heat to them, slipped heat shrink tube over the butt connector and shrunk it. Should be fairly waterproof.

Kind of freaked out for a few minutes, when after removing the stock lights, I couldn't get the EDM's to fit in place. Then realized you have to remove the stock backing plate. The EDM lights then fit right into place and will bolt in.

No pics during the process. I did take the opportunity to clean and then wax all newly exposed, accessable surfaces, of course.

The EDM's had lamps in them when I bought them, but the headlight lamps were not a pair, so I put some Osram somethings in that probably came out of my daughters '94. Have not been on the road yet, but they look nice in my garage! Hope tha aim is somewhat OK. I will be getting a leveler controller switch.

To aim them manually, just turn the phillips head screw sticking out of the adjuster motors... although they should be OK as set.

Thanks. I wondered what those were for.
