Shifters are all the same for Legacy, Impreza and WRXs, but later cars have an extra u-joint. STI shifter will bolt right in, but you need that extra joint to hook it up...about $60 from Subaru. Any add-on short shift kit that just changes geometry should work, no problem.

I had the understanding you need a full linkage from a newer car to run a short throw shifter. Our design is very different.

This is more true...

Many of the later units have a backwards U-joint setup...so if you drive out the roll pin on the transmission and change the U-joint...it should work well.

so the one off of ebay for like 30 bucks will work. it is only the shifter. i did not know if they would work so i just took a hack saw to my shifter to shorten it.

You have to have the matching shifter linkage assembly. So you will need to swap that out as well if you get the ebay shifter.

I have a spare u joint if someone wants. Its a common upgrade to buy a new one when installing a better shifter (since they get some play with age)
