my exhaust is leaking at the connection in front of the second cat convertor. looks like a metal doughnut. it was rattling some on my trip to l.a. and back to ohio and really started making noise the last day.
questions:
can i get rid of the second cat convertor without hurting engine performance? will it help performance? will it be a lot louder? where can i get the first cat and y pipe at a good price if i need one? where to get that doughnut gasket, i figure subaru.
thanks!

gaskets can normally be found from local parts stores or muffler shops. a lot of muffler shops have a zillion shapes and sizes. muffler makers like Maremont (who make oem replacements for stores like advance auto parts) also make gaskets.
as for removing the cat, if you don't have emissions where they sniff the pipe it'd be somewhat OK, but if you can keep it, I suggest it.
rattling is normally caused by the heat shields that break. since you live in Ohio (the rust belt), check all the bolts that clamp them together and how they attach to the pipes/cats. try to shake the shields a little bit and see if they have movement - they shouldnt have any. I have a rattling heat shield on my 94 (drivers side cyl bank to the first cat), it's just impossible to find locally at the junkyards since they just sawz-all the pipes to remove all the cats on every car (i'm sure to collect on the metal inside the cat, which can be platinum, etc).

the piece is different then most exh. gaskets. it is a metal doughnut and the auro parts stores did not have one.
it will still have the front cat and ohio is not very strict anyway.
none of the shields are rattling. first thing i checked.
the car has only lived in ohio for 5 years, was a ca. car.
thanks for the help so far.
