EJ20G question. Difference in years/models?

Post by Caboobaroo »

So I think I found a motor, actually my friend has it torn down to nothing in his shop collecting dust.

I looked at it the other night and its a EJ20, almost positive its a "G" motor from what he tells me but its closed deck. I thought the G blocks were either open or semi open decks or am I wrong? Also what could this have come out of? Also has oil squirters as well

Sounds like an early Legacy Ej20g.

Impreza Ej20Gs were the open deck. (with a few exceptions) Many threads here to browse. I hate to send somebody over to Nasioc, but some searching in the -pre '02 forums should provide all the info you need also.

hey, if it has oil squirters i would bet on it being an EJ20 H or R twin turbo motor...

to my knolage the G's never got squirters but the H's and R's did.

If the block has the cross-hatching on it, its closed deck. If it does not have the cross hatching, well, you get the idea.

Not true. I've have several Legacy and Impreza closed deck Ej20g's through my garage and every one of them had squirters. However, Douglas Vincent has posted that some of the open deck EJ20H's he's had through his place have squirters, which I have never seen on an open deck Impreza engine. Maybe that's where you got confused.

Caboobaroo,
Let's try to make this easier. Post pictures of all of the parts and pieces of this engine and we'll indentify it for you. Trying to explain all the variants of the Ej20's and the differences would take pages and pages.

If it has it, get pictures of the intercooler, turbo, valve covers, intake manifold, and the inside of the heads. Those are the primary tells on these engines. Get the part number off of the turbo and the ECU if you can as well.
