I just replaced the knock sensor in my '96 Outback this weekend and next to maybe the air filter, it was the easiest thing ever! Took me maybe 3 minutes total from the time I popped the hood open to closing it back up. I had only done knock sensors on EJ22T's and they are a bitch, took me about 10 times that long just to get the bolt back in the block.
Anyways, you NA guys have nothing to bitch about when it comes to a knock sensor replacement, at least compared to the turbo guys.
It's amazing how much better my car runs now too. When I had a bad knock sensor on the EJ22T the car wouldn't even hardly run, on the Outback it seemed to run fine and I figured the slight roughness was normal because of the high mileage (175K) but now that I finally replaced it the car runs silky smooth.
Wow, that was easy....

Down on the block, under the #4 intake runner. Almost directly below the throttle linkage.

Someone complained? That's one of the many monkey-jobs on the N/A.
Midnight in a Perfect World on Amazon or order anywhere. The first book in a quartet chronicling the rise of a man from angry criminal to philanthropist. Midnight... is a distopic noirish novel featuring 'Duchess', a modified 1990 Subaru Legacy wagon.
When I went to replace the one on my SS, I thought "no sweat!"
Wow, was I wrong, it took a little bit of fiddling around, but I finally got the bolt to seat correctly during re-installation.
I also found it difficult to get that plug apart from where it was mounted.
Deff. easier on the n/a engines. My only problem there was the 4 inches of mouse shit and nuts harbored in that space.

You're telling me. I went from a n/a motor that was easy to work on to first the turbo motor, and now the turbo motor with AWIC. The engine bay is so freaking stuffed, I've got to put my hella horns under the space in the front of the passenger side where the ABS unit goes.
