New member with a '97 Turbo outback

Post by impreza_GC8 »

Went up to Des Moines, IA last weekend and purchased this vehicle from a fellow NASIOC'er. It is quite the vehicle to say the least and it deserves its nickname of "Frankenstine." On to the pics!

A decent pic that shows the white hatch and red door.

Notice anything "different" about whats under the hood scoop?

EJ22T crank & rods
EJ25 (NA) block halves.
EJ25 DOHC heads ('96 with hydro adjusters)
EJ25 flat top pistons
EJ20G intake manifold
440cc injectors
VF8 turbo (JDM ej20g)
catless 3" bellmouth downpipe
EJ22T exhaust
EJ22T fuel pump (have Walbro 255 in a box)
2002 WRX top mount IC with custom IC y-pipe
TurboXS adjustable bypass valve

Exterior:
white hatch and quarter panel with red driver's door
JDM Legacy front grill

The car needs to be tuned but OBD1 is somewhat limiting my tuning abilities. If anyone has any recommendations I will gladly listen.

Here is my other car:

Sweet, What are the numbers on that thing?

You need a matching hatch!

And a good clean!

Not much can be done as far as ECU tuning, other than running a piggyback (PerfectPower 6) or standalone ECU... Haltech 8 is a plug n play when ordered for the Subaru.

Nice assembleage of parts ya got there 8) Take it further with mismatched wheels....
I've seen a few really nice monochromatic Outbacks, they lend themselves nicely to that type of paint.

Have fun!

Is this car tuned for Torque instead of HP looking at the specs?

Looks pretty cool by the way! Who would expect an outback with a red door and white rear to be quick ?

Is that car originally from the NW? I think I recall seeing it on craigslist here.

Isn't PP6 meant for OBD2? This car is running the OBD1 EJ22T ECU and harness so I need OBD1 options. I am def open to a PP6 though.

IDK, "tuned" isn't the greatest term to use because the car isn't "tuned" at all, it needs to be but OBD1 sucks. It it build to be a budget sleeper using some good parts from various Subarus. Honestly my RS feels more torquey than the Outback in the lower rpm ranges except for high end when the turbo is fully spooled and pulling. The Outback has way more grunt on the highway as well.

It is from Des Moines, IA. It was on Craigslist there for a long long time.

^^^ Yes it has a Washington rebuild sticker. Do you know the person who build it perhaps? I would like to talk with him and ask some questions.
