Exhaust System(s)

Post by metalhead77 »

I had my car inspected today, and found out my muffler, and a few other (or all) components of my exhaust system are in need of replacing. Can anyone give me some ideas on what I could purchase to replace these parts, and what it would run me to purchase them. I'm not looking for major performance pieces, but it would be nice to get a better sound from the exhaust. My car is a 1994 Legacy LS non-turbo. Thanks.

Well, I just put a flowmaster 40 series muffler on my 93 today. So far, I like the sound. It sounds fairly deep and not too loud from the interior. Haven't had anyone give me a report on how it sounds coming down the road yet though. I haven't had any other exhaust work done so I can't give any input there, sorry.

Well if you want to go cheap, just go to a pick an pull. Otherwise, flowmaster + muffler shop is a good bet.

Does Flowmaster do a full system from header to pipe? And how much did your muffler cost you?

Actually, do any exhaust companies make a header to pipe kit? If so, can you give me info and prices. Thanks.

The only full exhaust setup I'm aware of is the one MRT made, which was equal length headers. The rear muffler section would need to be extended though.

That exhaust system fits the 2.2? How much extension would it need? How much does it cost? Thanks.

Yes it will fit.

Not sure if the mid pipe would need extended. But the axle piece will, and the hanger modified.

Here's a pic of an impreza muffler on my legacy

Not sure of the cost or even if MRT still makes them. I'd suggest looking on their site. You may have to try and pick one up used on nasioc.

Looks pretty good. Does it change the sound or power output? If so, for better or worse? What's their website?

Sound is louder for sure. If you go equal length headers, you'll loose the boxer sound. It will sound more race car/raspyish.

in response to how much i paid for the flowmaster, I paid around $100ish for the muffler and about $30 for labor. I didn't have the space or resources to do it myself so i felt justified and forking over that much...

I looked on MRT's site, but I didn't see anything. Alot of the stuff I saw either didn't fit my car, or if it did, it wasn't something I was looking for right now. Are there any other exhaust makers that make bits and pieces that fit my car with little to no modification?

That's kind of what I figured. They're not going to make n/a stuff any more since the WRX hit the states.

You may want to search on www.rs25.com

As for anything that will fit your car without any modification....probably not.

I've never heard a suby with equal length headers in person, but I would think that you should still be able to hear at least a hint of the boxer sound . Maybe this is the "raspyish" sound being refered to, but it shouldn't sound like a riced out honduh.

I believe part of,if not the main 'cause' of the boxer sound is the degree's of seperation in the firing of the cylinders. For whatever reason (balancing?) horizontally opposed motors fire at different degrees of rotation and seperation than in line or 'v' style motors. I think unequal length headers/exhaust manifolds can exaserbate or muffle this effect but not totally negate it.

Case in point, most cars come with unequal length exhaust manifolds from the factory but if you take the muffler off to make the sound louder you'll find they don't sound anything like a suby boxer motor.

A buddy of mine in Memphis had an SVX with true dual exhaust. It didn't have the boxer rumble. It was raspy sounding, but did not sound ricey. It sounded more race carish.....and sounded good.

A buddy here in Houston had a 2.5 RS with the MRT equal length headers. It had similar results.
