My 1992 subaru legacy touring wagon just passed amazingly well without them. In washington.
Cruise limit HC 220 cruise emissions 29 CO 1.2 Emissions was .51
idle limit HC 220 idle emissions 115 CO was .78 out of allowable 1.2
Hopefully i'll see another 2 years of service from her.

What do you guys do to get rid of the primary cat since it is permantly connected to both "exhuast" manifolds and also houses the 02 sensor? Or is the Turbo exhaust different?
With the age and miles and source for free s.s tubing, most of all my winter vehicles go catless. Only issue with the subie is the primary cat houses the 02 sensor. Do you guys just lop it off make a ypipe and add an 02 bung in one of the parts of the Y?
IS the engine managment on these cars picky at all? I know with the stock location the 02 is going to get exhaust from all 4 cylinders. Is it going to notice a difference if it's just getting exhaust from 2 cylinders (if I put it in one of the banks of the Y?)

Yeah, turbo cars are totally different with the downpipe and whatnot. These cars don't mind being catless since they are OBD1.
I'm not sure what people have done with the NA manifolds. One could fab up a decent collector with an O2 bung on it.

Hey Matt, where did you go to get your cat removed in WA? World One? PIA?

I had a 93 for awhile that the PO had a muffler shop fab a custom exhaust manifold . Then the PO bolted up a universal cat just past the Y pipe and the shop put a O2 bung in it.
No check engine light and it had great low and mid range.
It was a NA with a 5spd .
Id love to do that to my current 91 NA wagon .
