Just bought 91 legacy

Just like the title says but I bought it off of drifter7-. Well, the reason why I bought it was I saw it was for 1200 and asked if he will go down to 1000 before I came out and looked at it. He agreed. I've made my way down to his house with my bestest friend to drive the rental back. When I got there it looked about the same as the pics so I was content. Drifter7- comes out and we are talking, went for a test drive, tried to talk him down to 900 "JB weld everywhere and the oil leaks", but took it for 1000 anyways. My friend said she wouldn't have given no more than 600 and a week later she got to say "I told you so".

She got to tell me so because the oil leak was not from the rear main which I thought it was but wasn't. It was from the turbo drain hose which was a 1" heater hose zipped tied. But wait that's not all. The valve covers that have the evap tubes going together were plugged and the block vent hose was collapsed "1 inch heater hose is not oil resistant". So what happened was because the motor could not vent. It blew oil out the turbo drain tube. At least I got the rear main seal replaced.

Also had to unclog cylinder 1 injector by blowing air threw the pintle "not recommended".

After running throttle body cleaner threw the throttle body to clean it. Cylinder 3 knocks horrendously.

So now I have a knocking beast XD

I've bought these car to replace the 04 STI that I once owned. I've rolled that bit** and it was fun. I got hurt but it was fun XD
I wish I had 3500 to buy the car back from the insurance co. but oh well.

Oh yea, found rust on the legacy too. The car about fell off the jack stand because the rust gave way and nearly gave me a heart attack.

It's still a great car tho and if anyone has any tips on the knocking. I'm all ears. Going to try thicker oil and sea foam or atf.

Oh wow, Those all sound like very, very easy to spot things if you had actually looked in the engine bay.

well, I'm a fairly able-bodied mechanic, so the funky hoses would have thrown a red flag for me, *I'd have adjusted the price upon viewing car on that one* I'm wondering what exactly had JB weld on it. IF it was the 90' Elbow, well, that's about how most solve that one... Not a great permanant fix, but not a bad one. Something flexible and high temp is much better.

What would scare me though is the rust... Living in Missouri, that's the FIRST thing I look for! It's not easy to fix in most cases. My little Legacy has started to rust since I purchased it three years ago and it'll be 2k to repair the rust and about another 1500 to paint it.

The number three knock is what caused me to yank my engine as soon as I heard the noise. *spun rod bearing* and there was nothing I could do about it, except rebuild it. Just dont run it till it blows... that's an expensive lesson I learned in my 89 turbo GL.. It threw a rod and blew oil all over the turbo... and CAUGHT FIRE!

If it's tapping, you're cool.. it's a boxer, they love to make noise when they age.. if it's a real knock, you want to get it checked out.

Also, the sturdiness of the turbo cranks, it's likely the crank is fine, you can have a machine shop check it out and install new bearings/rings and you're back on your way. *of course with the proper hoses installed*

JB weld is the best. When used properly, it can't be beat in a pinch, especially where most welders shy from aluminum jobs.

quicklook - If the car is far away I usually like to talk the person down a few before I get there because most of the time not everything that is wrong with the car is reveled in pictures or by the owner.

94ss_canada - what are the problems you are considering very easy to spot when I look in the engine bay?

Legacy Rally Guy - The hoses "heater hoses" I was not able to see except the one that was venting the block to the intake and pcv. The one on the turbo I had to take the down pipe off to notice that one and didn't think of it till it still leaked.
I tried to knock the price down but he was going to take the service books away. I know I can find info on the net but they are nice to have. Especial all the diagrams and specs to everything at the turn of a page. The rust I saw what he saw. Untill it was at the house on jack stands.
It's not that bad but a little scary when the car moved while I was under it.
Yea the motor is almost out and then I'll fix it. I probable messed it up good with revving the hell out of it but it hasn't blown.
My sti tapped all the time. Annoying when people keep telling me it's doing it but at least it's getting noticed or was noticed.

quicklook - started with 1700, then he put it up for 1200, talked him down to 1000 over the phone, got there and tried for 900 but he said the service manuals will not be with it then so I said fine 1000 it is. My friend said she wouldn't pay more than 600 for it. She keeps saying "I told you so".

ericem - yea the rust isn't bad it's just a few spots. I can get a body kit to cover the most of it and just clean of the rest. Repaint the car and it will be looking nice

This may sound dumb but you can get a feel for what is right and what is wrong, look for easy things, replaced plugs, filter and easy maintanence if these look melnourshied then i would suspect something...

I just didn't know if you meant the oil leak was an easy to spot of where it was coming from that all. But yea I change everything maintenance wise when I buy a car used. So I don't really worry about if they look bad. The car had bosch platinum plugs in it

it was the grinding the price down over the phone that i don't like, but you knew that already.
