oops. Just noticed you are in Washington, not B.C.

but have you looked at hotels? I was a bell-boy/concierge/valet for a few years in college (recently)

as long as the property allows you to accept tips you can make some sweet cash (for student standards)

but, I have no idea if Van, Wa is big or has any 4 Star+ properties. That seems to be where you make the money....

I was working in Calgary, which is big oil money and big tourism in summerc, so cash was flowing....

if you are only a college student and you already hate your life, wait until 20 or 30 years of problems get piled up on you.

cheer up.

these are the best years of your life.

make a plan.

write a 5 year plan down on paper.

the next day expand that to a 10 year plan.

find a mentor.

talk to your parents and older relatives for advice, they know you best.

travel.

pay attention.

do everything that you attempt to the best of your ability.

watch the credit trap.

get up every day thinking you are going to succeed.

attack getting a job like it is a job.

good luck.

Good advice. I'll add:

Live cheap so that you can support yourself on nearly anything.

That's advice I wish I had listened to myself on a few years ago. I used to work in a marina fixing boats and loved it. Got into Telecom for the money, bought a house and a new car, but I'm worse off. If I need to make a lot more money to pay expenses now, which leaves me really screwed if I lose my job whereas before I could work almost anywhere to pay the bills, if necessary, and had plenty of money to sit on my ass for a few months with no worries. Had I not bought the house and the new car I don't like (another older Subaru as a beater would have been a better choice), I'd be sitting on a pile of cash and be able to travel again and enjoy myself with no worries and be able to help out friends and such as well.

Instead, and beside my better instincts, I listened to the advice: Buy a house. It's a great investment!

Of course, that doesn't help you find a job. I don't recommend the internet for resumes as they seem to rarely find matches unless you're in specific industries recruiters are looking for. Put them out, but don't rely on that alone. Go out and deliver resumes in person as much as possible. If you can, try to talk to the person who does the hiring. I've jumped into several different careers I had little to no previous experience or qualification for by doing this (and from networking).

I started as a peon inspector in a quality department and ended up moving up easily until I was 2nd supervisor. That job moved. Then I got hired as a production designer to help get engineering prototypes adapted to assembly line builds at a PC card mfg., took over the service contracts for the equipment when I found out how much it cost and how easy they were to fix, and ended up doing process engineering to best utilize the production lines for throughput and working on designing what would have been the world's first automatic straddle edge connector installation machine (though that never worked consistently due to impossible variations in parts). That job went to Malaysia. Then I went to work on cars, but that didn't pay shit so I tried the marina at the end of my street even though I knew nothing about boats. Impressed the head mechanic. That money was only acceptable, and I ended up in telecom after talking to some people about one of the vehicles I want to build got me a job offer despite no previous experience. I was lucky in that they needed people, but quickly became one of the best guys on the sites. You'd be amazed at how impressed people are with someone who just shows up on time, doesn't bring drama, and gives a shit that their work is done on time and correctly. And never burn bridges, even if people at a place are assholes. My friend's done that a few times and it's come back to bite him several times (he's a slow learner).

I realize you're in school and that makes finding a job tougher with needing flexible hours and that's a lot of crap you probably didn't want to read through, but I wanted to illustrate that my advice comes from successful personal experience and hope it helps you out. I never finished school. I got 2 years into Industrial Design before hopelessly running out of money, but I've still done OK.
Midnight in a Perfect World on Amazon or order anywhere. The first book in a quartet chronicling the rise of a man from angry criminal to philanthropist. Midnight... is a distopic noirish novel featuring 'Duchess', a modified 1990 Subaru Legacy wagon.

When job hunting you should always dress accordingly and try to work your way UP wind so it cant smell you coming. Keep low to the ground and aim carefully. You don't want to be charged by a wounded job! Take it down in one shot!
