94 Legacy RS Turbo Wagon (fixed pics/updates!)

Post by iluvdrt »

Timmy P bought this wagon about a month ago smoking like crazy. A short compression test showed cyl #4 was shot. After pulling the engine and heads we saw the #4 ringland melted away. The rings were OK, and so was the cyl wall. Here is where the build starts.

Car: 94 Legacy Turbo RS Wagon
Trans: 4EAT
Brakes: Stock (vented front and rear disc)
suspension: Stock with Whiteline springs
Engine: EJ22T

Our plans are to not only document and rebuild the engine, but the brakes and suspension too....all in about 2-3 months (I am deploying soon).

Here is where we are.
EJ22T bored .020"
weisco forged pistons/rings
weisco HG
ARP head studs
Toga race bearings
EJ25D Heads, flowtested and machined
EJ25D Intake manifold
Invidia uppipe
WRX TD04 (will be upgraded later)
Top Line gasket set
3" flowmaster exhaust
07 WRX TR exhaust manifold
New water pump
new t-stat
EJ25D t-belt

What we need:
STi Injectors
EJ25D seals
PP6 engine management
EJ22T t-belt tensioner
and I am sure a bunch of other stuff along the way

Here are the pics so far...

The machine work is being performed at Majestic Motorsports in J-ville, NC.

Update:

Read on to see about this place. I do not Rec them, they did not do a good job at all with the build.

You sure you don't want to toss in some Eagle rods while you are in there? The stock set leaves a lot to be desired.

You need to use the 2.5 timing belt tensioner with the DOHC heads and belt.

Otherwise, good luck.

Cool, I am glad the t-belt tensioner will work. it came new with the heads I got.
As far as rods, it was considered, but I really havent heard of anyone breaking a rod unless they are going to really push the limits. The largest turbo discussed in this build was a VF-39, and possibly a 18G. Not to much.

Gotcha. Ask NICO how many EJ22T shortblocks he has grenaded, lol.

Those turbos will be pushing the limit of that rotating assembly, so good tuning is a must.

Now I am scared......

I also ordered some parts today. Mostly just seals and o-rings for the fuel system. I also orderd new bolts for the cams and intake. The OEM ones were looking rough.

Still on the list to buy:

Injectors
PP6
odds and ends.

Don't be that scared. A friend of mine is making about 296whp on a stock 22T bottom end. He went to a good tuner though. Jorge from P&L comes up here once in a while.

Done, you have PM.

I will have a few more pics very soon. I should be getting some parts in soon, and I am having some sand blasted and painted.

I will also be cleaning out the heads and oil passages as well. I was thinking about just using a parts washer we have here on base. It uses a biodegradeable cleaner to clean things. I think that will work, than Ill coat everything in a nice coat of motor oil to keep it fresh and rust free.

OK, sorry I havent been around in a while. Predeployment briefs and such.

I got the new manifold together, it looks sweet. Ill have pics this weekend. I should also be getting the block back as well with pics. Tim comes back this week, so we should be able to get the rest of the parts soon, and hopefully complete the swap by mid Nov.

Pics soon.

UPDATES!!

I got the intake manifold completed. It now has yellow top STI injectors, and all new seals through the fuel lines.

The engine is back now. It appears to be in pretty good shape, and they did a good job cleaning it. The new pistons look great inside. They did leave the oil pick up tube loose though inside the pan

So now, the heads are on. We used copper to coat the head gaskets, and ARP studs to bolt everything together. We gave it a new water pump and thermostat as well.
The timing belt tensioner does not bolt up to the bracket, so we need the newer style bracket to accomodate the new style tensioner. Other than that she is almost ready.

The next few pics are just for fun. We placed everything together and did a mock twin turbo set up, and a monster turbo set up. Enjoy.

ehh, why not, I mean thats why I got the rubber matting. The only prob was the amount of over spray. I didnt anticipate that, LOL.
