JDM EJ20 questions

I have (seller told me) a 95 EJ20 twin turbo motor from japan. I got it up on the engine stand today and took the timing cover off to replace the belt and idlers. I noticed there's an oil leak either from the crank seal or the gasket of the oil pump.
Where can I buy a new oil pump that will fit a 95 JDM EJ20 motor?
How do I find out which version or year this motor is?
Outside of timing cover.
Inside the timing cover.
The wiring harness is cut. I have a 91 EJ22T intake and wiring harness. The intakes are different. The JDM one has some vacuum lins coming off the front of the intake that the USDM intake does not have. The coolant fill tank is on the opposite side. Probably other differences too that I haven't noticed yet.
Can I use the harness from the 91 EJ20T with the Intake on the JDM motor? Or should I swap over the whole 91 intake and harness?
When I took off the crank pulley I couldn't see a timing mark. Is there supposed to be one? I have the group A lightweight pulleys that are going on and it doesn't have any marks either.
Do these two little holes have anything to do with it?
I have a mystery 3" downpipe that I got with the car and I think the O2 bung is on the wrong end. It's on the outlet end. Should I have a bung put in it up by the turbo or lengthen the O2 wires or sell it and get the right down pipe?

A USDM Legacy Turbo or a USDM WRX oil pump will work fine.
When you say 'ej20t intake and harness' Do you mean stock USDM Legacy Turbo? Or do you mean an imported JDM, EDM or Aussie Legacy/Liberty RS?
Have an O2 bung welded in by an exhaust shop before you install it.

I meant the stock USDM legacy turbo intake and harness. Will the harness work with the JDM intake? Or should I swap the USDM intake on with the USDM harness?
Or is either possible at all?

Now that I reread it I noticed I accidently did put Ej20T which was supposed to be EJ22T. I'll fix it.

Should I get any old oil pump for a 91 legacy EJ22T or does it need to be a genuine subaru part? Where would you recommend buying subaru parts from? Besides the dealership.

1stsubaruparts.com $136 shipped for a EJ22T oil pump. This sound about right?

EJ22T intake manifold will not fit on the DOHC heads.
You need an EJ20G, EJ20K, EJ20H/R (twin turbo) or a USDM EJ25D ('96 - ~'99, DOHC) intake manifold. There might be a few others, but those are the most llikely to be found.
EJ20G is designed for the 90degree turbo inlet, but the others may work with it also. Use your O.E. EJ22T intake manifold harness. Some of those the coil will bolt on to, others you will need to fabricate a coilpack bracket. Some of those you will need to lenthen the IAC wires.
The EJ25D intake will need the EGR port blocked and is a non-turbo manifold, but the IAC is in the same spot as the factory EJ22T and has a coilpack mount cast in.

So are you saying the EJ22T harness will work with the EJ20 H/K JDM intake? Or do I need to buy a new intake and harness?
Since it's twin turbo and I'm only using one TD04 turbo, do I just find a bolt that will fit in the oil and coolant line holes and block them off?
I just ordered the oil pump for a 91 EJ22T from 1stsubaruparts.com total came to $137 and change shipped after tax.

I have this feeling that somebody is going to have to come help me with this eventually. I may be in over my head on this one, not sure yet.

I'm ready to order some stuff for this EJ20 motor. I would like to replace the cam seals, crank seal, water pump and get a metal seperator plate for the back of the engine. I already bought an oil pump for an EJ22T and I have it here in my hands from 1stsubaruparts.com.
Will all these things from for an EJ22T motor fit this JDM EJ20 DOHC? Are the cam seals the same? Can I just order four cam seals for an EJ22T?
I can't find the seperator plate on the 1st subaru parts site. Does anyone have a part number?

Is this the seperator plate? Number 34 Rear main seal retainer, legacy - 1.8l, impreza and legacy - 1.8L, IMPREZA and LEGACY 91-94 $16.90 $12.17
1.8l though...

All those seals and the plate are the same as your original engine. For easiest reference and to avoid confusing the guy at the parts counter just ask for parts for a 1996 DOHC Ej25 engine.
You can use your intake wiring harness on the Ej20 manifold. You will need to futz with a few wire lengths for certain sensors so unwrap it and test fit it before you install it.

Thanks matt that's good to hear! I was worried I would have to find a new intake manifold. It was starting to look like my $350 EJ20 motor wasn't a good deal after all. I guess it may still be a bad deal if it's got internal problems or anything else comes up.
I'm headed out to the garage in a few minutes to do some late night engine work. I was gonna take the water pump and oil pump off to get part numbers to look up on 1stsubaruparts.com before I put my order in. I guess I'll have to buy the metal plate at the local dealership because I can't find it on the online oem catelog.

On my Car that Cut wire looks like the one that goes to the EJ22T knock sensor, except in a diffrent location.
That Sensor with the yellow stocker, that is the IACV. Idle air control valve, it is used for cold starts and lets the car idle properly.
I believe all those line on top are the fuel lines.
If i were you, REBUILD. Hks plugs shows signs that the previous owner liked his car, maybe a little too much...

How much would it cost to rebuild it and what exactly would be done to the motor in a rebuild?
Is this motor worth rebuilding or should I find another one or an EJ22T block and rebuild it instead? I have another set of JDM DOHC heads and almost all the parts from an EJ22T minus the block and internals.
What about the timing marks? Is it ok if one side is of by that much?

Just got back from the dealership. They are EXPENSIVE! For the seperator plate, 4 cam seals, intake manifold gaskets and crank seal they wanted $122! I took the part numbers and put them in 1stsubaruparts.com and they were about half the price the dealership wanted.
I still save over $40 from 1st subaru parts even after shipping
$63.33 Total
$68.90 After Tax
$81.85 After Tax + Shipping
I'm not going to buy this stuff until I figure out if what I'm doing with this engine.
Is it any good with the spark plugs looking like that and the white sediment in the coolant lines and fill tank? Should I rebuild it or find a new motor?
Does the oil pump have a gasket? Because I didn't get one with the pump and the guy at the dealership pulled up the diagram and said it's not shown in the picture.
Is this the seperator plate I was looking for?

I got my water pump today and it didn't come with a gasket either.
Do the water pump and oil pump not use gaskets on subaru motors?
I looked up the part number on that seperator plate and it's for the 2.5 engine 96 and newer I think. I knew it didn't look the same as the metal ones I've seen on the EJ22.

The plate number is the same one for the EJ22T.
The oil pump is sealed to block with sealant.
You will need to buy a water pump gasket.

Twin turbo was out of a JDM Legacy, which probably had the Sport Steer option, the cut wire on the front of the block is probably for that, it would go to a solenoid on the power steering pump which is located right about there.
Ignore it, just make sure there's no wire strands hanging out.
That crap on the plugs is usually caused by gasoline additives.
White in the cooling system is Aluminum oxides, previous owners used cheap anti-freeze.
I'd recommend Pentosin anti-freeze, does not react with Al or steel.

So you think the engine is good? Or don't see a reason to think it's been overheated or abused? If this engine is no good I may have to wait until next year to get my subaru running until I can afford to buy another motor. If you think it's fine then I can keep going with the project.
I hope it's ok.

Well, that's the $6.4K question, ain't it?

You don't know until you throw it in the car and go for a drive. I got burned on my engine, as a few others have on JDM motors, but
lots more have had great success with them. You just gotta give it a try.
It looks to be in average to good condition, clean it up, replace the oil seals and drop it in.

That sucks! I was told not to buy JDM motors because they abuse them knowing they have to replace them in like 60K kilometers or whatever it is.
I guess I'll do it though. Not much other choice but to search for an EJ22T and I've been doing that but haven't found anything yet.
What about that black pipe that goes to both turbos under the intake? Is there one of those for the EJ22T that I need to locate?
If there's anything straight forward about swapping a motor this is about the furthest from it. I thought for some crazy reason that it would be pretty simple but now that I'm getting into it I realize I was pretty wrong. Pretty difficult task I've decided to undergo for putting in my first engine by myself. I've taken one out before and put it back in but this is much different.

Just ordered some stuff from the dealership up north. Prices are about half of what they are at the local dealer. Local dealer wanted $11 a seal for cam seals which I paid $5 each from up north.
Hopefully the 91 turbo water pump gasket is the same as a 95-99 gasket because I could not find a 91-94 water pump gasket in their system and the part number for it does not come up with anything.
I also tried to order all new coolant hoses but those weren't in the system either. Flywheel bolts were not in the system so the junkyard will need to help me out there.
Word of caution when ordering from 1stsubaruparts.com. If you're done looking up parts and wish to check out do not click the shopping cart link. It will take you to the cart but the cart is now empty! That was a pain in the ass and at first I didn't know why it was doing that. Instead you have to find a part and add it to the cart and it takes you to the cart automatically and then you just delete that item and checkout.

When I removed the cam sprockets I found that two of the cam seals was leaking oil pretty badly.
Rusty water pump. Eww...
The driver's side head with oil feedline for one of the turbos. I bought some bolts to plug these holes both on the front and back but they're too long and need to be cut first.
Hopefully this week I'll have everything back together in the front of the engine along with a new oil pump, water pump, thermostat, cam seals, crank seal, idlers, tensioner pulley and timing belt.
Then I can remove the intake and remove that pipe that goes to both the turbos and put the EJ22T wiring harness in.
