Mysterious noise - after replacing most everything...

Post by Herm99 »

So I still have a noise that I can describe as a "thump thump thump" or a clunk clunk - coming from the front, that i ONLY get in long LEFT TURNS.

So far up front I have replaced - both axles, both end links, both ball joints, brakes and rotors are brand new. The only thing I havent replaced yet is the tie rod ends. However in my 10+ years of working on cars, I've never heard tie rod ends make a noise like this, however it may be possible?

The other thing I'm wondering is if I I may of gotten a bad axle from one of my sources. The front left axle I got from autohausaz.com, whom i've gotten OEM parts from for years and never had one issue with their parts. The front right axle I ended up getting from Autozone as I was in a hurry at the time and they had one.

Has anyone had a noise like this come from a tie rod end? Also, what about the struts themselves, I believe they need replaced, could they be making this thumping noise?

Thanks fella's.

i installed an aftermarket front axle that was too short and ended up popping out when i was trying to turn around on a busy sidestreet.

may not pertain to your situation, but anytime someone says thump thump thump while turning i immediately think axle.

Besides the axles......other thing it may be is the brake lines, depending on the brake line and if it can slide through the collar that is anchored on the strut.

My SS braided lines do that on occasion.

Check the top nut on the strut itself, it may be loose and be causing the perch and tophat to clunk.

^^^ or that nut may be tight and the assembly is firmly held together but the strut mount bearing is out. It doesn't happen often, but it can and does.

Assuming it's not a wheel bearing?

I thought about wheel bearing, but have never heard one make such a noise, they tend to humm and whistle, not pop...but who knows?

I'll have to check the strut nuts and mounts. Thanks guys
