So I have a 2.5" downpipe into a 3" exhaust, no cat (well cat is there, just no "cat" And Swear To God it truly fell out by itself, questioning the integrity of the exhuast shop....) into a 2.5" muffler.....

I have owned a few 3" mufflers for a few years attached to 3" exhaust systems (basically downpipe back) but never had the time to mess with them.

Well today, I messed with it.

I grabbed the 3" APEXI muffler and exhaust, lined it up with the existing and made some SHARPIE markings. A few hours later, it was all welded up and ready to run.....

ITS SO FUCKING LOUD!!!!:sadbanana::ritz::disco::banana::taco::furious::eek::rolleyes: I really am not sure what to do....

But I took it for a test drive anyway....

Wow, did I say loud?

So I got to a section of closed roadway in a school zone and got into 4th gear......

OK, I am running a 20psi max boost gauge...., so I have no idea what I am truyly runnning...

Previously I was hitting about what I think was 22psi max.......Fuel pressure was hitting 57 psi....

New 4th gear run? Fuel pressure hit 68 psi!!!!

My fuel pressure rising rate has been VERY consistant with boost levels, so I am pretty damn sure that the boost DID increase 10psi, to 30-32 psi for that run....

I pulled over and turned the MBC DOWN!!!!!

Wagon is FASTAR than before, even for same boost levels because it hits peek boost earlier.

Hitting the track this weekend!

Took the family wagon out to the strip (PIR) one last time as it is the end of the season here in Oregon.

Only got one 12.998, but trapped a 110.26!

Was having a hard time hooking up in first.

Had some good power though, was 84 mph in the 1/8th and 109/110 in the 1/4, so I was picking up 25mph in the top end.

Two best runs....

60' 1.917 2.018
330' 5.519 5.644
1/8th 8.441 8.558
mph 84.70 84.92
1/4 12.998 13.092
mph 109.44 110.26

All the camera would be showing right now is the clutch letting go at 4500 rpm! Added timing and fuel in up top, and its a monster(ish) wagon till the clutch slips. Gonna have to upgrade to a 4puck...

Pressure plate surface was SHOOOOOOTTTTT. The 6 puck disc was down to rivits and ate the **** out of the pressure plate.....

I have a new flywheel, didn't care about the old one. But the pressure plate?

I was ****ed. Wagon needs to run pronto, not wait 8 days for custom dual diaphram 550lb plate.....

So.....

Image
Image

Quickly built a jig, attached it to the rotating table on my ancient Jet mill/drill and resurfaced the pressure plate. I had to take ALOT off, so much that I also had to take 1/32" off the mounting points as well.

Ghetto Fabrication!

Then.....

Turns out I SHOULD NOT HAVE MILLED OFF THE MOUNTING POINTS!!!!

the reason I milled off the mounting points was that because the pressure plate was milled, it threw off the "ratio" of how much the springs go in when then plate is bolted down. I milled off too much...

After about 3-4 hours of experimentation and measurements of other plates and flywheels (I have gobs of stock crap), I then shimmed the pressure plate out .030" and installed back into the wagon and it works!

200 miles on it!

Beat the shit out of it on a beach for 4-5 times doing cookies, donuts, patries, sand drags, sandwiches and gereral food related mahem..... PERFECT.

And today I now am almost 100% E85. Installed the 800cc fifth injector.

Can you say quick?

Added a 2nd fuel pump. Already maxed out the Walbro, so installed a 97 EJ20R pump....

Image

Fuel pressure sits at 51 psi, and now I have plenty of fuel up top!

Either lost a headgasket or cracked a cylinder wall..... :(

Still "driveable" but on boost I lose coolent.... And at idle it bubbles.

CRAP! What did I do wrong this time? ;)

My bet? cracked #4 cylinder wall.....

Still driving..... The HG "leak" is there, but managable.....

Been having issues with running out of fuel out of nowhere! No matter what I did, I would run out. Swapped another Walbro in, so I had two. No go. Went back to one fuel pump and a rrfpr. This helped, but still no go.

Ok, so I kept watching my IDC.... And occasionally it would get to 72% then BAM down to max of maybe 65% at WOT @ 6000rpm. Not good.

So I kept checking codes.

Bad maf kept popping up.

Well, the ecu hates going over 4.98 volts, so I had it clamped there. Been like that forever. If the ECU thinks its over the limit on MAF voltage, it pulls fuel....

But now? Had to back it down to 4.9.

MAGIC. now IDCs are back up to 85%ish...

AFR are low and steady.

However, now I am stuck using the damn rrfpr for a bit because I really really really don't want to swap the damn fuel pumps again!

Midnight in a Perfect World on Amazon or order anywhere. The first book in a quartet chronicling the rise of a man from angry criminal to philanthropist. Midnight... is a distopic noirish novel featuring 'Duchess', a modified 1990 Subaru Legacy wagon.

Holy Cow! That's some impressive numbers, maybe not what you wanted but, nothing to sneeze at.
LOL! You left Steve nearly speechless! That's the least I've ever seen him write about anything, I think!
