Question about cool down....

Post by drewriviera »

I recently put stainless headers on my car. When I did this, I gutted the cats, and put copper heat wrap on the headers and downpipe all the way to the first cat. I also put a turbo heat wrap blanket on the VF-11....Damn this thing really kicks now, but I don't have a turbo timer because I live in the mountains and it's a 5 speed. Does anyone know how long I should leave it idling before I shut it off everyday?

The turbo timers I've seen working were usually running for a minute- a minute and a half before shutting down the engine.

It really depends on how hard you ran the car. Usually, when I'm coming back from a hard ride, I just go smoother on the car while getting in my neighbourhood so the engine has time to cool down.

For me the best way to cool down the engine is by running the car slowly after the crime so the air circulates instead of letting the heat rising up in engine bay without any air circulation.
Legacy turbo, desnorkled, intercooled, TD04, Borla catback, urethane mounts, wrx rear brakes.

^ Same here, unless I have to shut it down right away. I can watch my EGT's come down quite a bit by driving around at 30 mph for a bit coming off the highway.

If it's the stock setup, the cooling system will also aid in cooling the turbo by way of convection.

But I wouldn't run the piss out of it and turn it immediately off...
