My spedo started reading low then over a day went to 0. Thinking that it was an easy fix I just bought a new spedo cable and installed it (along with a bunch of dash lights). Sadly that did not fix it. thats what I get for thinking without testing.
The question is: Is it the "elbow" that goes into the transmission or is there something in the transmission that has gone bad.
Here is what I know and what it does. First the spedo cable is new. Second, if I hook a dripp motor up to the spedo through the new cable the spedo reads OK without any jumping of the indicator.
The elbow that goes into the transmission appears to have stripped a few threads so I trimmed off the bad threads and shortened the length. I screwed that back in and had a better fit.
When cold the spedo does not read at all. When the engine warms up (read after 5 miles or so on the road) the spedo starts to read with a jerking motion at about half actual speed. Sometimes it does not read at all.
My first guess is to get the elbow but I'm hoping someone knows about the internals of the transmission who could say that (for example) the linkage in the tranny is solit and would not slip like that.
