Diagnosing Sound

Post by rmarques »

I'm getting a clicking sound from the transmission.
5spd turbo 306,000kms.
Had it in the air.. it's either a bearing in the rear of the transmission, or it's a driveshaft. It's clicking at constant speed.
Anyone have this issue? What's a bearing sound like when it's on its way out?
Also, do all 90-94 legacy driveshafts fit? NA and turbo?
Thx

I have heard of using a stethoscope to pinpoint the origin of the sound you could try that. I just replaced a bearing in my trans, and the noise was just a constant droning. NA and turbo drive shafts both fit.

The only real way to know is to drop it.

Thanks for the reply. I used a stethoscope but there's no real way to diag the driveshaft while it's moving.

It's possible that the driveshaft may be transmitting noise to the transmission because that's where I'm hearing it.

But yes you're right.. I will drop the shaft to inspect and maybe try another shaft to see if it's that..

What type of droning were you getting? Any clicking?

Anyone else have similar experiences?

Clicking is usually a sign of a bad universal on the driveshaft wouldn't you think? Like with a axle on the car. Possibly try something like throwing oil all over the universal and see if it makes any difference noise wise.

Measure the length to make sure it will work.

and you need to make sure it's the correct axle type (male or female).

Driveshafts are the same between years, only difference is 5spd vs auto. Auto is shorter. I agree with checking the axles first. Check for torn boots.
