The SSAC kit for the non-USDM impreza is pretty good. and it is also fairly cheap. I picked one up and was impressed. I am going to have to mod the pipes, so it is not in yet, but if you are in for a budget FMIC, the price is right.

I like the CX racing GC8 FMIC kit for the SS & have one of these kits on my OBS & another on my SS.

I haven't seen the SSAC stuff yet, but I have a CX Racing generic kit at home and it is really nice stuff. It is of the thicker (2mm wall) piping, has nice silicone couplers, and the nice T-bolt clamps. It's all black powder coated too, but I get to mess that up by cutting and welding it.

alright cool
what size 2.5" or 3"
i plan on running either the stock VF11, TDO4, or something similar
and what size core would fit in a '91?

2.5" is fine unless you are trying to max out a 40R or something larger.
As far as core size, that depends on what you want to do with your bumper beam.

+1 with Dan.
My TIG Aluminum Welding Buddy really liked the pipe thickness & easy of weldability sooo much we always use CX racing aluminum tubing on projects now.
We also use their t-bolt clamps & connectors as well - can't be beat for the price...
Based on the excellent results we had with the other products we have used from CX Racing we have tried out of their aluminum RADIATORS with Excellent results.
They now carry a JDM GC8 WRX Aluminum Radiator for about $144 on ebay which should drop right onto a SS & is an alternative to the KOYO's folks have been having issues with.
Comparing the intercooler core to a Spearco I had & paid $1,000,000 for, the CX Racing core is EXACTLY the same as a Spearco core on visual inspection @ a fraction of the cost!
We have run over 35psi from a GT45R on these cores with NO PROBLEM!
Be careful with some of the other FMIC cores from ebay which are junk - Hybird comes to mind, these things are SUPER THIN Walled, bend up, & look mangled once you Touch them...
To see all of the products they have easily go to CXRACING.com

I actually used two of these kits.

A couple of 2.5" bends were needed to mod the kit to fit the SS.

my whole plan for my car is:

440 or 550 injectors, depending turbo (stock or TD04)
REVTRONIX stage 2
20g heads (depending on money and time)
coffee cup mod
Guages (boost and fuel pres.)
walbro 255 fuel pump
N/A fuel rails
TD04 turbo
all = about $1100-$1200
I already have exhaust and down pipe and all cats removed from the car...any other recommendations are welcome, just keep in mind im working on a fixed budget.

Fair Warning - The I/C core is HUGE & is a pain to fit...
It does fit though as shown in the above pic links of my Legacy & Impreza.

Will that intercooler fit without cutting the bumper beam?

I've got a '97 Outback and I'm pretty sure it will fit. Can't say about you older gen guys.

i finally got my cxracing 2.75" universal intercooler tubing and couplers yesterday... their piping is pretty thick compared tosome other stuff i've seen.
My kit included 2 aluminum 45* bends 2 90* bends 2 Straight pipes and 2 U Bends plus couplers and t-bolt clamps
$107 delivered to my door
Now, it's a shame that i have to cut up my greddy kit to make this all work.....
