Will a 90-94 engine/trans fit into a '95?

Post by egertk »

Hi there, new to subaru's but definately not new to cars. I've been combing the net and this forum everywhere but have not found any definitive answer on this. My girlfriend just got screwed over on this 95 legacy she bought from some guy, turns out it needs the headgaskets done and the transmission is f'd. I feel really bad and want to help her replace it all. There's a good 1990 legacy L AWD with the 5MT (hers is also a 5MT AWD) at the local pull-a-part. I'm wondering is there any issue with taking the whole motor and tranny out of that one and swapping it into the '95? The code on her cars tranny is TY752VAAAA, which according to something I saw on here is a series 2, same gear spacing, but a viscous type center diff. The junkyard transmission is a TY752ZA1AA, which means the only difference is that it's a multi-plate center diff type. (Please somebody correct me if I'm wrong on that) They both appear to be the same style clutch actuation, both cable type, actuated in the same direction. Has anybody done a swap like this? Any input would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

It will all be a direct replacement. Center diffs are irrelevant. Final Drive ratios are what matter, and both the cars you are talking about have a 4.11 FD.

The only "if" is the output ports on her '95 engine. Most '95 Legacies still had duel port heads, but it was a transition year and some time during that production cycle they switched over to the single port heads. If on some off chance her car has single port heads, you will need to get the header pipe from the junkyard when you grab the engine and transmission.

You will need to use her engine's intake manifold and wiring harness on the new longblock. That's the easiest and keeps it the most compatible. If you happen to have a mix and match of EGR cars (Either one of these engines may or may not have EGR). you will need to block it off. If the 1990 engine has it and her's doesn't you block it at the backside of the head on the engine. If they engine does NOT have EGR but her '95 did, you will make a block off plate on the intake manifold. If they are both EGR or they both do NOT have EGR then you don't have to do anything special.

Wow, awesome response thanks for the info! Is there a quick way to tell if she has a dual port head by looking at the exhaust manifold?

Yep. It will be pretty obvious. The exhaust manifold will either have two pipes or one pipe where it bolts to the head.

FWIW, my experience is the '95 Automatics were EGR; 5-speeds were not. That's why the '95 AT is used a lot in 2.5 Outback swaps - it has the EGR and dual port heads....been there, learned that.

Matt...thanks for the clarification..I've got an extra 2.2 from my swap and now I have more possible recipients.

Good luck.

Thanks again everybody for all the input. Spent 4 hours at the junkyard yesterday getting everything unhooked from a 5 speed transmission they had there in a 1990 legacy. Unfortunately, I had pulled the drain plug at the start with the intention of checking it for metal shaving, but forgot to since it dropped in the oil pan. Then right before dropping the thing to the ground, I was like oh hey I should check that. FULL of metal shaving... :( So I'll have to scour the yard for another one, I'll let you all know how it goes!

My 4EAT 1995 Legacy wagon was a non-EGR single port head Ej22. But talk to an Impreza owner and he'll most likely tell you that his 1995 Impreza 4EAT has EGR and dual port heads.
