EJ22 into Turbo

Post by abest10 »

Hello im in the process of turboing my 2.2 from a 98 impreza. I took the heads and everything looks great. Clean as a whistle. Was going to go with DOHC heads but that was more work than I had planned. I think im just going with 91 Legacy turbo heads.(EJ22T) Also would my stock 98 2.2 intake manifold fit with EJ22T heads? I looked into but couldnt find info. Im going to replace the water pump with a turbo one like WRX or Legacy Turbo. Also I have a headgasket question. Will I get one for the 2.2 block or for the heads. I've always been told you use the one for the block but could someone verify this? Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks!!!

If your '98 is not an odd ball & has the same style v-covers as the SS, the intake should fit on the SS heads no problem.

Or you could go the the parts shed and buy my jdm wrx heads and 97 legacy 2.5l intake manifold and you will be good to go. :)

I actually have a JDM WRX DOHC intake & head conversion in the parts shed as well, but the sohc ej22t heads will keep everything simple.
So I say use the ej22t heads.

Good Luck with the conversion!

Most of the stuff should be bolt-on, you may need to use a turbo water-pump to clear the turbo manifold (but you had that on your parts list anyway).

Not sure how easy or hard it is to do, but you may want to convert the ej22t heads to roller rockers from ej22e heads while they are off the car & easy to work on.

Pretty sure the 98 intake manifold will not align properly with the 22t heads.

The above is not correct.

IF the '98 has the same style valve covers as a ej22t (which it should unless it is an oddball) it is a PHASE I sohc motor & ANY Phase I intake will bolt up even if sensors are different (which will be avoided by using the intake that came with the car).

If the 98 you have has SOHC 2.5 style valve covers it is a phase II 2.2l & the intake will not fit.

I've seen '98's @ my local J/Y & they had the same v-covers as the ej22t - meaning they are phase I.

Again ANY phase I SOHC intake will bolt up to a Phase I SOHC heads.

An easy way to check the fit of the manifold on the ej22t heads would be to buy a intake manifold gasket for your car & place it on a ej22t head to see if the bolt holes line up (don't worry too much about the little dowel pins as long as everything else matches up.

so now i'm wondering, is the only difference between any of the phase I heads the dowel pins as far as alignment goes?

what is the difference of phase I and phase II intake manifolds that make them incompatible?

just wondering
i wish my subaru ran like my rotary!!?

I have both Phase I & phase II 2.2ls (94SS had the ej22t, 96 OBS is PI ej22e, 99OBS is PII ej22).

Phase I's are totally different motors than phase II.
The Phase II ports are MUCH larger than PI ports & because of this the manifold flange is much wider - not even close to matching.

The Dowels may or may not crossover directly - does not matter either way if everything else lines up (which it should if my above criteria is met).

I confirmed and my 96 and 98 intake manifold will fit the ej22t heads with no problems. so any phase I heads with phase I intake manifold will work. the red manifold is from a 91 legacy turbo and the silver one is from a 98 impreza 2.2

I also found out that 2.2 and 1.8 n/a fuel rails will not fit the legacy turbo injectors

Looking at FMU stuff and vortech seems to be the best candidate. Hopefully I will use that with a 255 walbro fuel pump and be set. Just need to get a downpipe. Im thinking on just making my own or finding a cheap used one. Any suggestions? thanks

I think making one from a stock DP flange or using a stock SS DP is the most economical option.
