High idle problem
the last few days my car has been acting weird. it seems that the torque converter is engaging while im trying to stop, it wants to keep the car going. at a stop it keeps the rpms at about 1200 then if i shirt it into neutral it revs up to 2000rpms. i think it the torque, what should i do? change the fluid it probable needs it

Sounds more like an idle issue to me. Does the idle ever return to 750ish RPM in Park or Neutral?
Does the Power light flash after car is started? (I don't mean light up and then turn off when the key is turned On.) If it does, check the codes. Here's HOW.

Ok, then it's a motor problem not the transmission probably. The car is reving too high when it's meant to be idling.
You could check here... http://www.surrealmirage.com/subaru/engine.html to see how to check whether there are trouble codes in the cars computer(ECU). The codes tell us if there are any electrical problems and they sometimes point to other non-electrical problems as well.
You could also have a carefull look under the bonnet to see if you can see any small rubber hoses off anywhere on or around the motor.
Tell us also if there has been any recent work done on the vehicle. How long the problem has been doing this. Did it get gradually worse or come on full blown all at once. Does it have any other symptoms. Does it, for instance, do it worse cold than hot, or vice-vera.

i havent had any real work done to it, iv owned it for just a few months now and this has happened three times, once a while ago when i first bought it i didnt think much of it i just turned the car off and it didnt do it anymore. then the other day i was driving on the freeway for about 50 miles then i hit traffic and it started to to it again then the rpms dropped down to almost dead but it wouldnt die. then i turned off my climate control and let it idle in traffic and it was fine. then today i pulled in to my house it was doing it again.
-i dont think the weather affect it or not
-ill look for any hoses that may be lose or running off to no where

Moving to engine forum as this is a high idle issue.
If you turn the engine off & on again, does the problem go away?

I just picked up a 94 turbo doing the same damn thing. I've been trouble shooting this for three weeks and have nothing. Luckily i broke the gauge cluster while doing other work , forcing me to swap from another legacy. This new gauge cluster immediatly alerted me that the check engine light was on, unlike the original. I am scanning it in a few days, but if anyone knows any ideas i would love to hear. My thought is that the MAF is dirty or the TPS is done.
Check the ECU for codes first before you do anything else.
