171k miles nice prestine car dad is buying me a birthday present!!!

so its a 2.5dohc and im aware that they do have head gasket issues and was wondering if most of the first gen outback 95-99 have a coolant smell under the hood when it open do bad but you catch a whiff of coolant every 1-2 minutes?

drove the car home and the transmission shifted fine could probably use a trans flush soon leaks no fluids interior very nice and actually has some ass to it but i was wondering on starters what kid of mods besides 2.5rs headers, catback, cold air, what kind of motor swap would be be best like hybrid motors. and i would also like to know if this set up would be a strong NA car: jdm ej20dohc heads and stock block and metal head gasket. sorry about all the questions im just excited and ready to make a badass outback!!
