1972 TVR 2500M Yes or No??

Post by Imprezive »

So I just started my new job about 2 weeks ago. I'm currently working for a guy that owns a shop that services SCCA Spec Racer Ford's. Obviously my boss is a car guy, and being such a car guy he happens to own a Yellow 1972 TVR 2500M. I asked him a few questions about it and it sounds as if he would be willing to part with it, and probably for pretty cheap considering its got a cracked windshield and typical english car issues.

So here's my question: If he's willing to part with it for fairly cheap is it worth picking up as a project car?

I don't know a whole lot about TVR's specifically but I've always wanted an oldschool sports car like this. I've got no clue what kinda maintenance a car like this would need but I'm assuming a lot haha.

Any input would be greatly appreciated. :-D

I highly suggest you find that out before you buy an old sports car like a TVR...because, yes it's a LOT, not to mention just the time and effort it takes just to find parts, let alone keep the car running. If you're not totally committed to a project like that, it can easily become a gigantic burden on your wallet, your time and your garage space.

For me, anything with a Lucas electrical system is a deal-breaker.

That said, TVRs are cool cars...if you get it, I sincerely wish you the best of luck!

oh boy this is where the fun story comes in where my boss told me how he drove it from florida (where he bought it) to california and all the things that broke because the PO didn't do any maintenance to it.

He ended up re-wiring most of the car though, so this Lucas harness you speak of is probably at least partially nonexistent anymore. And the engine was rebuilt...

would def be a sweet project car/weekend cruiser type deal.

Go over it VERY carefully for rust... My uncle had one for years, great little car, but it fell apart at the seams from frame rust.

Pick up a Hemmings Motor News, there should be parts suppliers advertising there.

Q. Why do the English drink warm beer?

A. Lucas refrigerators. :P

Anything TVR is automatically a thumbs up for me :D

But it will be a nightmare to maintain, may be ok as a weekend car though, but parts will be extremely hard to get as well.

You also have to look at it from a resale point of view as well. Can you get the money back out of it you put into it? Typically no, but old collector sports cars can go up in value over the years as less & less become available to the general public.

TVR's are sweet, but the company did recently go under... :(

i thought tvr's were fiberglass?
personally I would stay away from a car like that. where are you going to find a new windshield? when you do will it be more than $500? stuff like that. there are plenty of cool old obscure cars that arent as obscure as a tvr. something like a 240Z or a triumph TR whatever.

Well the guy sourced a windshield and it turns out its the rear window out of some other old truck haha. I have no idea how much it would cost...

I'll have to check it out and start researching it. The more I read about it and look at pictures of what it could look like the more i want it.

I understand completely. that happenned to me with a 240 sx then i realized it was a convertable so i decided to stick with the subaru. but if you think you can hang with it even if you run into problem areas i would say yes. just think you will be the only one with one im sure unless you join a club. i can say ive never seen a TVR or i would have crashed my own car by accident.

Why would you defile a car like a TVR with some pile of shit American engine that would turn it into a drag car?!?

Well the car isnt all bad, I mean its relatively simple I can work on it myself without ever having to take it to a dealer, its a classic, I dont have to smog it, its effin beautiful, and I'm sure it'll handle fairly well :P

I'll see if I can snag some pictures of it...

well, didnt many tvrs have a rover V8 in em, similar motor to the buick 215? so technically they would be piece of shit drag cars(hot rods?) too eh?

i guess the real question is, do you hate america or love terrorism?

+1! That'd be as bad as putting a small block ford into an AC roadster.

the funny thing is TVR put Ford V-8's in the Griffith 200 and 400 in the 1960's.

I helped with a rebuild of an MG B a while back... it was expensive and not that fun to work on, and that was with readily available parts and a large community. I'm guessing the TVR is more complex. If you've got the patience and money it's a great looking car, but have no doubt it will cause you some headaches.

Yeah...but the 215 is actually a pretty neat motor...being all aluminum and whatnot

And I don't know where you get off with your hating America and loving terrorism comment...just because I don't dig most American engineering blunders doesn't mean I don't love America...
