larger wheels.....possible to damage car?
I've been rolling some 17" Forester XT wheels with 215/55/17's. I was sure they would rub, but don't seem to be, however, it seems like there is some louder noise coming from the drivetrain. It seems to be more than just road-to-tire noise, can't really tell if it is amplifying some weird drivetrain noise, or what. Doesn't seem to change if I'm going straight or turning, more pronounced at higher speeds. I'm not really expecting you guys to give me a straight up diagnosis, but do I need to worry that these larger wheels could be doing some sort of damage? Sorry for the seemingly dumb question. I sure do like the way the car looks now, ride is a bit rougher over bumps but quicker through corners, and a bit higher too.

With a larger rolling diameter, the drivetrain will be turning slower for a given vehicle speed. But that shouldn't put more stress on it. Are they heavier that the stock wheels/tires? If so they might be amplifying one or more wheel bearing that might be starting to go out.
Also, if the tire wear is uneven the differentials have to work harder and will likely be louder. Which is bad for them.
