New (used) 5MT, new noise. WTF?

Post by 94.GT.Wagon »

My 94 wagon has 180k on it and the front diff was making a fair amount of noise so I've been on the lookout for a used tranny. Found one with 100k on it and just finished putting it in last night. The new trans feels great, way better than the old one, but makes a strange noise. I would compare the sound to a rollerskate wheel spinning (makes me think bearing?) and it is loudest in first gear and gets quieter with each gear until fifth where it is almost non-existant. The noise seems to speed up with engine rpm and sounds more severe under heavier load, less severe under light load and goes away if you push the clutch in and coast or if you put it in neutral and let the clutch out and coast. I'm gonna take it for a longer drive this afternoon and maybe that will give me some more info but for now I thought I'd post up and see if anyone's had this before. BTW, I replaced the old gear lube with new synthetic 75w-90.

Just drove it again. It's junk. Sounds like a cement mixer and there are a few fine metal particles in the lube on the dipstick. This is really lame. I think on Monday I'll be contacting the salvage yard about getting my money back, but for the sake of learning, if anyone has any thoughts on what might be wrong with it I'd be glad to hear them.
