crank wobble?????

Ok, so I've got an EJ22T that I'm going to be putting in my 94 impreza wagon. When I was replacing the timing belt and water pump I noticed that the crank moves forward and backward if I pull/push on the crank pulley. I hope that makes sense. I'm thinking bearings.

Is this a big problem?

It's the trust bearing.

If it's enough to notice casually like that, more than likely the engine needs to come apart for new bearings.

If this is a "throwaway" motor, then it might run like that for quite a while still.

Yeah if you can move it in and out by hand, I'm pretty sure that's bad.

If this is the right spec here, the maximum play in the crank should be no more than .0098 or about 1/100th of an inch. The normal play is .0012-.0045 inch. Basically no play at all.

stupid question, are you sure you are seeing the actual crank move, or maybe only the pulley is slidding.

I wouldn't say that's a stupid question. When I bought my car, the motor that was supposed to come with it (ej22t) had a vast amount of play in the crank. I'd say about 1/8".

At first I thought it was just the pulley, but it's not. The flywheel moves too. What's the worst that could happen? And how long?

I just want the car finished at this point so I can get autocrossing. It doesn't need to last that long. I'll be done school in a year then hopefully I'll be able to afford a second car, which would allow me to have the time to completely rebuild.

Jake15 told me it was normal on subaru engines and not to worry about it.

Caused by sitting or starting up with the foot on the clutch probably.

If you leave it like that too long it will wreck your conrods so it''s better sooner than later.

How long it will go is impossible to say. High revs aren't going to do it any good that's for sure, and you want to rally it so I'd have to say it won't go for long. Also, motors like that loose power. Just as balancing your motor makes it run sweet and rev quicker, so does taking all the end-float out.

grrr, I was hoping I wouldn't have to tear this thing apart. What parts will I need to fix this? Crank bearings? Also, I'll need a bunch of gaskets to put everything back together. Anybody wanna give me a list?

Actually, I'm not sure if they're replaceable w/o pulling the crank.

Minimum parts, hopefully I don't miss anything.

Head gaskets.
Oil pump o-ring and front main seal.
Waterpump gasket.
Rear main seal.
Tube of Fujibond or equivalent.
Intake manifold gaskets.
Exhaust manifold gaskets.
Turbo to uppipe gasket.
Coolant crossover pipe o-rings.
Case o-rings (3, IIRC)
Dipstick o-rings.
Oil pickup o-ring.
Case plug aluminum sealing washers.
Turbo oil feed copper sealing washers.
Bearings, of course.

Some items can be safely reused, but consider your budget vs. cost vs. condition vs. Murphy's Law when deciding what to replace or not.

I would do rings and a "kiss hone", if I had my motor this far apart. I might have the crank polished depending on how it looked, but if it's running well with only excessive endfloat, then the crank is most likely servicable.

Oil pan is just sealant from the factory, but Felpro does have a gasket if desired.

Fujibond - Where do you buy this stuff at? I can't find it anywhere. Dealership?

I'd also replace the valve cover gaskets, cam seals and rear crank seal.

One more question. Are the head gaskets, intake manifold gaskets, etc. the same for the EJ22T and the EJ22E (turbo and N/A) ?

Intake manifold gaskets, yes.

Head gaskets, no. EJ22T is thicker.

If your getting a complete gasket set, get turbo specific.

Honestly I would do the works if I took a motor apart this far. Piston rings, pistons because, yea think the man said you should probably hone the cylinders.

The Engine Rebuild kit can be had for like $225 from Subaru Genuine parts.com I got it for mine, and there is stuff in there that I have no Idea what it belongs to...

Not at all. I talked to him about it and he said it was normal on subaru engines to have play in the crank. Said it was from riding the clutch too much. But he said it would be fine.

I couldn't accept that though. Which is why I never bought the block from the guy who bought the car from Jake. I can't remember exaclty what it was exactly but I think it was about 25 times past the maximum play spec in the factory service manual.

Ok, so I ordered some ACL race bearings from ebay and the seller sent me this message:

"can you let us know your main bearing in 5 position or 3 position? And the rod bearing in 52mm shaft size or 48mm shaft size?"

Does anybody know the answer to these questions?
