I finally found and got a 94 SS to replace my wrecked TW. It has a dead engine so I'm going to swap over my engine and performance bits over. Think I'm going to run with the 3.90 5MT tranny for a bit and see how I like it compared to my 4.11 5MT. I'm NOT selling the 4.11 either, just in case the 3.90 dies or I want the 4.11 back in (guh, that's going to be a lot of work with the engine in, isn't it?).
I know while I have the engine out I could/should do a ton of things to save me money, maintenance, etc. I'm trying to balance the cost/time issue too. I don't have the money to replace every major part or do a rebuild. Also I don't want the swapping process to take weeks -- I've already been without a car for 13 days and it's going to be another 7 till it's done due to work. My TW engine seemed to be running great, so I'm very tempted to just swap it over and call it done.
What simple/cheap things should I replace on the engine while it's out?
As I started to take the TW apart, I noticed a large? amount of oil in the intake tube. Something to worry about from the TD05? Is this what a catchcan would help with? Just leave it as is?
On the advice of many, I'll be replacing most of the heater hose from the TMIC/TD05 swap I used for the air/vac lines with transmission hose. That shit sure is expensive, but apparently will withstand the oil and temperature.
The clutch on my TW felt good when I was driving it. I believe it has about 35K miles on it (new clutch was installed when the 4.11 was put in back in Dec 2006). Should I replace it? If so, was thinking going with the stock WRX clutch setup, since I'd rather the clutch slip than grenade the tranny.
During engine/tranny separation on the SS, I got bit by the damn clutch release pin! After fighting trying to get the engine and tranny to separate for a good 1.5hrs, I recalled something about a pin that needed removal. Called up 555BCTurbo who reminded me about the 10mm allen key and then 6mm bolt needed to remove the pin -- the bolt from the coil pack worked quite well and the pin slid out relatively easily with some leverage. Once it was removed, the two easily split apart!
For others reading the thread, 10mm allen location:
View of the pin how it sits inside the tranny:
This is how I left the car last night. The whole inside of the transmission and bracing was covered in oil. Spent a bit of time cleaning that mess up along with the bay.
Wait wait wait! You say that allen bolt needs to be removed to seperate the tranny from the engine?
If that is the case, that would have been nice to know the other night when i was wrestling with the damn thing for half an hour. I was dog tired after that and I got almost nowhere. The tranny came off the engine about 1/2" and that's all.
wow...
Thank you. You probably saved my back a few years.

Any other suggestions on specific things to check/replace while things are out? Planning on working on things full time the remainder of this week/end.
FYI the engine that I have in mine right now also blows a lot of oil through the PCV system.
My semi-permanent fix to keeping oil out of the intake/intercooler system was to use a small air filter for a compressor from the hardware store tool department, it was right next to all the air tool fittings.
The clear glass tube allows me to see all the oil that is being kept out of the intake, certainly enough to keep all the surfaces coated.......
