Damn... Is this a more severe case of the infamous "piston slap," or something a bit more serious (wrist pin troubles)? My wife's '99 impreza makes a hell of a racket until the motor warms up... I tell her not to drive it until its idled for 5 mins or so.

So is that what makes the car sound like a lawnmower? The ticking noise for a few min while warming up?

Hydralic lift adjuster. it's in the tip of your rocker arm (EJ22T), and if it doesn't "pump up" it'll tick until it does. quite common. I had to replace 4 in mine once. all intake ones in right side.

Wiseco's have offset pins, but I can't speak for other makes.
Piston slap, meh. Welcome to Subaru's. My built motor is quieter than most factory engines. That doesn't mean a slappy motor won't wive you another 100k. I friend of mine's 96 2.2 Legacy has perma-slap on one piston. He beats the thing like it owes him money, and has got him home for a few years.
