Weird sound, CV? Wheel bearing?

Post by Apex3 »

Cars making a weird noise when I drive, I thought maybe it was a CV, but I thought those usually clicked, then I thought it might be a wheel bearing, but those usually whine.

What it does is it has a rythmic sound coming from the front, it's not a clicking or banging kind of noise, almost like a rubbing sound but I know that's not it, and you can feel it about as much as you can hear it. Obviously it speeds up when I speed up, but it may be quieter or louder depending on speed, and it does get louder when I turn either direction. I'm having trouble figuring out what side it's coming from too. It should be noted that the sound was there when I bought the car stock, and I'm on my third set of tires and I have new springs/struts, so it isn't related to those.

Normally in this situation I'd just start replacing things until it went away, but I'm a bit low on funds so I'd really like to figure out what it is first...

I do have a CV boot that is leaking, but not torn, I put more grease in it and nothing changed at all.

I've never heard a wheel bearing whine.

It usually sounds like a low-pitched hum, or if they're in really bad shape, a scraping sound.

It will get louder with speed, and probably get louder when cornering due to the weight transfer.

So yeah, what you're describing sounds like wheel bearing(s).

On the flip side of that, sometimes they will shut up upon cornering for the same reason.

If it gets louder when cornering then probably bearing. If it comes and goes with throttle or bumps in the road I'd suspet axle/inner cv.
