FSM Coil pack specifications are reversed

Post by BSOD2600 »

Both the FSM (1992_legacy.pdf) and Haynes manual both use the same numbers for checking out the coil pack. The both have the numbers reversed for the primary and secondary sides!

Thinking my coil pack was bad, since the numbers weren't even close to matching, I went and bought a new one from the dealer. Then I measured the terminals again -- still wrong per the FSM!

Primary side:
Between 1 and 2: measured 13.7K ohms
Between 3 and 4: measured 13.7K ohms

Secondary side:
Between terminal No 1 and No 2: measured 0.7 ohm
Between terminal No 2 and No 3: measured 0.7 ohm

Do you think the "EXCEPT TURBO MODEL" has anything to do with it?

Not really. The turbo section (which is also wrong since it states the coil packs are on top of the spark plugs.... FSM must be for non-USA cars). Anyways, as I said before, the haynes manual also has the exact same info as the FSM pic above.

I wasn't being an ahole just for clarification. i was just too lazy to check into it myself and found it easier to ask you if that had something to do with it :)

Ha, nice trick.

That naming is wrong too. The primary sides of ignition coils have always been the low voltage side and the secondary has always been the high voltage side.

I have just had a look in a subaru diagnostic manual that uses the conventional naming convention but they still have the resistance readings back to front. The high resistance will be on the high voltage side though.

Well nuts, that explains it all -- wrong FSM.

Josh, do you have a complete US FSM posted somewhere? I thought you only had the full parts manual and these various one-off FSM scans up...

Yeah but it's not because it's the wrong manual, it's the wrong information no matter what car you have. I have copies of other genuine subaru manuals and they make the same mistake. Perhaps it was a translation problem.

No I do not have a complete manual posted anywhere. I've got all the 1990 Wiring diagrams scanned.

My suggestion would be to look through what I have posted. There's a lot of stuff there like the coil pack that I've scanned at one time or another.
