This clutch, that clutch?

I need to get a clutch for the 91, the question, is what clutches fit the leggy? I know 91-94, but do the 02-05 wrx clutchs fit?
And what are the thoughts on the brands of clutches and flywheels?
Such as...
ACT
Fidanza
Clutch Masters
Exedy

The WRX clutch works fine, though the clutch disk is apparently a few mm larger than the Legacy disk.
In my experience (and in many others) this is a non issue. I've yet to hear of any problems as a result of running the WRX clutch. I've got just about 40K miles on mine without the hint of an issue.
I just purchased an Exedy OEM clutch kit off of ebay for like $140.

That's what I did. Bought the 91 turbo exedy clutch kit off ebay for probably about $140 and bolted that up to a clutchmasters lightweight WRX flywheel and put that on my EJ20G motor.
I haven't ran it yet though.

Yeah wrx stuff is the way to go.Its a debate but i wouldnt bother with anything other than stock flywheel though if that is something you were thinking about.Unless its stock wrx which is what i used.

my old 91 had a WRX tranny with an exedy stage 1 clutch and it was great. For daily driving, and launching. Just depending on what your plans are for the car I would build around that. It's funny when people think they need a stage 3 clutch for a DSM with a boost controller.

I'd definitely recommend stock flywheel. A LW flywheel really affects the drivability of the car for daily driving. Driving smooth takes A LOT more effort.

Just takes a bit getting used to. I will be putting a light flywheel into every car I ever have.
The day I bought this wagon from Dave I stalled it, then never again. Hell my GF drives it just fine too. It's a non-issue.

It's interesting to see the different opinions on the lightweight flywheels. I've never used one before.
Doesn't it make it easier to double clutch with the lightweight flywheel?

Yup, makes it easier.

My 94 has a lightweight (although not super light) flywheel compared to my 91 and I much prefer the feel of the 94.

+1 on the WRX clutch and Exedy LW (14 lb) fly wheel
It's funny because I forgot that I have the light weight flywheel, you just get really used to it
Faster rev matching makes driving 'easier' in a way
It's certainly a preference/intention issue, but I agree that I will always want a light/er/ish flywheel

I've never used one either, but I've always planned for it when my car calls for a new clutch

I had a Exedy stage one and Exedy LW flywheel, what junk those parts were. Clutch lasted about 5000 mi., flywheel was noisy, no real performance gains. Just garbage. Replaced with ACT SB4-HDSS clutch and stock STi flywheel. Works great. Pure bliss, shifts really easy, piece of cake to drive. I will never, EVER, in my lifetime, or yours, use anything Exedy. So there![makes farting noise with lips]. This is in my '91 with '06 STI six speed.

I think the LW flywheel has it's +'s and -'s. I have an easier time rev matching with the stock heavy flywheel than the lightweight one. I think that's just because I suck at it though - lol.
An Exedy clutch that lasted 5K miles doesn't seem right to me. I've been happy with every clutch kit from them I've installed (4 or 5).

I heard of people having problems with the clutch pedal not returning to its position properly with the WRX clutch. Can anyone confirm this. I need to get a new clutch for my 91 SS and need to decide weather to go with a stock one or a WRX.

i ahve had problems with every exedy clutch i have had. they cant handle my driveing. if you have the money to spend on a good clutch go with a spec combo or cusco clutch.
LW flywheels are easy to drive. i dont know whta everyones problem is. i recommend a LW flywheel for and clutch change.
the spec flywheel has a changeable friction disc. this way you never have to buy a LW flywheel again. just change the disc.

ACT gets their disks from Diakin though.

That's how my clutchmasters LW flywheel is. I got it for free basically because it came with my EJ20H and it was in pretty good condition but the friction disc was pretty worn. So I bought a new one (cost like $115 just for the stupid insert!) but the retail on that flywheel is like $475. So says the clutchmasters site. So I figure I wasn't going to get it for less than $300 new or $200 used so it wasn't a bad deal.

I can confirm that when I put in a WRX clutch I did NOT have any problems with the pedal positioning.

ok don't make fun of me but i ordered a wrx clutch. and yes it is a stage 3 and a lw flywheel. but i do like the stage 3 and lw flywheel feel. It makes me feel like im driving my racecar. Also a friend had stage 3 with lw flywheel on his mazda's (1988 626, and rx7) and they are a blast to drive because it is so damn....racelike.

Oy, no bueno. I have a Stage 2 and it's ok, but I really wish I had stayed stock or at the most a Stage 1.

I'm in the middle of reading about clutches because I need one myself. It's a cable clutch so not totally the same as a hydro setup, dunno how much different they really are stage 1 to stage 1. I want it to hold up to the 22t with all the common bolt ons, havent done those yet but do need a clutch now. I'm guessing 300BHP is about what I'm looking at for maxing out the stock ecu with different turbo, intercooler, FCD, TBE, etc. please correct me if I'm wrong.
Here's what I can gather from reading mostly on nasioc and here.
F1 Racing off of ebay: slipping at 8k miles on a modded wrx? dunno, would like some beta on the 6 puck stage 3 which is ~$160 cheeeep!
SPEC Clutch: some people are saying they wear fast, I saw $320 for stage 1 from a nasioc vendor. subiegal said she loved the stage 1 but didn't really give much follow up info. Don't buy stage 2 kevlar, it wears fast. stage 3 is supposed to be decent if you want a 6 puck clutch.
Exedy Stage 1: Good reviews all around. supposedly has good wear resistance. dunno what power levels its actually good for. I saw $373 or something.
Clutchnet?
ACT?

I have an F1 Stage 2 clutch. It's been in for about 2.5 years and doesn't show any signs of slipping. Although, I'd like to try a Stage 1 this next time around.
