STi with Mattracks

Post by 206er »

love him or hate him Ken Block does some cool stuff with his money. I'd definitely go backcountry in this thing. at least when I'm not snowshoing up the skin track :P

damn that thing is nuts! I like Ken Block, but he is definately over-rated. There are far better drivers that get no recognition what-so-ever. But he is a DAMN good driver no doubt.

I always wanted a set of those on the rear of my VW Thing to make a half-track out of it...

I want a set for my van. Too bad they're like $4k each.

That was actually more impressive than the subaru. I watched the whole thing even though it was pretty long. That thing was unstoppable! Way back then too, damn. Then in the summer you just take them off your car and put your axles and wheels back on.

i wonder why that technology never really went anywhere. seems like you could take one of those on water too. they'd be hell on cement or gravel, but it said it bolted right onto a tractor in place of the axles.

i dont particularly like horses but that pissed me off when the guy kept whipping the one that was stuck in snow. :(

That they started plowing the streets is a big reason those went away. Back in that day, people only registered cars for half a year since they were undriveable in winter. Horses would sometimes plow, but imagine the job they did pulling a plow with a bunch of rocks on top to weigh it down. It was mainly for pedestrian purposes. People also didn't have as much need to get around or go as far. The good old days.

Just because something is "cool" it doesn't make it practical. I saw some quotes out there for 21k for a 4wd truck.

I dont know if this company is German but they have the same philosophy. I can hear their engineers now:

"zee ok, ve replace zee 1 wheel wiss zee 1 moving partz wiss a track zeestem wiss 472 moving partz. thiss vill make it bettar!"

Mattracks is a company out of northwest Minnesota. Their display at the state fair every year is pretty sweet.

The cost of the setup depends on how heavy the vehicle and its intended use. Still cheaper than many of the options for going into areas that wheeled vehicles cannot, or would cause too much damage to the environment.

This looks like fun.

lol wtf tats awesome! Block is definitely having fun with his money, who can blame him? I think Travis Pastrana was probably one of this first to cross over from the initial extreme sports crowd and start doing other stuff with his talent/money. Now you can see moto-cross/bmx/skateboarding/etc pro's in rallying, drifting, and offroad truck racing.

Those mattracks are pretty sweet. You can remove them and put your wheels back on in 30 mins!

This video is pretty cool. Shows they're quite versatile.

What type of terrain can you go through and how does MATTRACKS reduce compaction?
With MATTRACKS, you really not going through it… you’re going on top of it! You see, MATTRACKS has a unique ability to reduce ground pressure. When you reduce ground pressure, you travel on top where the going is easy!

MATTRACKS large surface area (26 square feet!) will allow you to travel on snow, mud, sand, swamp, or bogs with ease! A standard truck with tires will exert up to 40 p.s.i. of down pressure on it’s tire contact area. A person standing will exert 6 to 8 p.s.i. of down pressure. The MATTRACKS system on a vehicle has as low as 1.5 p.s.i. of down pressure. This eliminates compaction and ruts.
Pretty cool, should be able to run your hand over without breaking anything.
