FS-MN: Australian Dual-Range EJ 5MT

AFAIK, the only one brought to North America. functions just like a standard EJ 5MT with a viscous center LSD etc. but, it also has a 1.196:1 lo-range reduction on the input shaft selected by a cable. it's like being able to switch from a 3.90 axle ratio to a 4.65 on the fly. great for short-track racing (RallyX, AutoX...), lo range for track gears, hi range for highway gears coming home.Uses a cable clutch, and needs a 3.90 rear diff.

came out of a '92 Liberty GX in Australia. A guy out in washington state imported it for his project, but it took about a year before he actually got it, at which point, he had scrapped the project. he offered it up for sale early last spring, so I bought it.

It has not been installed in a car since it's been imported.

Internals are much like those from an '87-'89 RX, except with an EJ bellhousing and VLSD center diff. Here's an RX box apart....only major difference is the pinion shaft.

1.59:1 lo-range from a part-time 4WD EA82 subaru box (quite common) is swappable if you want even lower gears.

Do you have the lever for the selectible gear range?

nope. only linkage is the hi-lo cable. something to shift it would need to be fabbed.

can you put a 4.44 front diff in it?

yes, you can. BUT, AFAIK 4.111 or 4.444 ring gears will have to machined down a bit to clear the low range gears (this might only be true if you're using the 1.59:1 lo range). I would highly recommend searching australian sites (like Ausubaru.com) for more info on this if you're serious about it.
