To those with "connections", 6 speed cost?

Post by PhyrraM »

And by "connections" I mean legal ones.

What is the "good deal" cost on a STI 6 speed? JDM or USDM.

Our Legacies already have the 3.9:1 rear end, so the swap should be as easy as clutch, flywheel, shift linkage, mount, and automatic driveshaft. A VLSD center diff is preferable to a DCCD one, but beggars can't be choosers.

Think one can be had for less than $2000ish? Seems too low to me, but I don't have connections.

You can use a five speed clutch with the 6 speed transmission.

Some 6 speeds use a 3.54 rear differential.

Interesting. Just the disc? Just the pressure plate?

I know the '07 uses the 3.54, and possibly some of the JDM, but by far most of them use the 3.9 we already have.

'06 up use a 3.545 rear end.

Depending on the tranny you get, you may need the infamous stub axles and seals. Aside from those, its a shifter linkage, driveshaft, and clutch away from bolting in.

It's soooooooo worth it.

But is $2000 reasonable? Not needing any of the rear end stuff the WRX guys need?

Most folks ASK for more, but never post what they ended up ACTUALLY letting it go for.

Worth what? I saw a USDM STI's 6mt with broken 2nd gear sell for $200 in about 15 minutes. I had emailed the guy as soon as it posted and he said I was 5th in line or something...

Worth the 30-year newer transmission design. The 6mt feels like butter compared to a 5mt. And has gears that are almost twice the size.

I don't know what used 6mt's go for these days. I bought mine back in '06 when they were an especially hot item. Needless to say I paid too much for it. I have no idea what today's market is like.

Interesting. The only 6mt subaru I have driven was a 7k mile dealer trade-in STI, and the clutch and gearbox really did feel good. The 5mt Subarus I've driven (and I have driven many) felt really bad. I assumed they were beat on. But I'm not really interested in the 6th gear, but the front LSD. Sure I COULD put one in my 5mt, but...

No the entire clutch as a unit can be used. You can also use a 6 speed clutch on a five speed with the help of a dremel.

I think the my04 through early my06 had the 3.9 rear.

Near where I live is a STI specialist called Silverline Automotive. They sell kits for $4500 that include Trans, axles, driveline, and rear end.
