LSD photos and specs
Does anyone have a photo of the Subaru axle LSD and transmission LSD? a spec would help. Like number of bolts and splines.
Cheers
Chris

Aren't center diffs on 5mt's LSD?ciper wrote:Can you rephrase the question? None of them had front LSD. The rear LSD is the same externally as the open differential, which is exactly the same as the later differential except that one is male and the other is female.
Edit: Subaru calls the 5mt center diff a "viscous-type locking center differential"

My bad. You are technically correct. It's sort of slang in the Subaru world to call it the center differential where as people often want to replace the front with an LSD.
I think this is the standard 4kg center differential from the 90-98 non dccd 5mt

From what I know the options for a center diff in a 5mt are -
1. 4kg unit
2. STi HD unit 20kg
3. STi non-R/RA unit 12kg
4. Subaru DCCD
4. KAAZ 1.5-way mechanical
5. Cusco 1-way
6. Cusco 35:65
You can buy new Subaru uprated center differentials here,,, but it would probably be cost prohibitive compared to a 6 speed swap

Here is an old article about the center differentials that may interest you.

Why the interest? I'm trying to find LSD to fit the Suzuki Swift GTI . If you think Subaru parts are expensive go shop Suzuki. For a crappy little car the parts are expensive. Good thing is I have STI front struts and STI control arm bushes for my GTI engine mounts. Another option would be to graft a FWD Subaru engine and tranny in the back of the swift to make a Swifura or Subift...hahahaha

found this on clubWRX.net from morgie :
Center diffs are all the same for any subaru model except STI.
BUT
they changed in '99 ...
so ANY 98 or less center diff will fit in any 98 or less Subaru. Any 99+ center diff will fit in any 99+ Subaru.
Here is what they look like, Left : 98-, Right : 99+

-----------------------------------
my 2002 wrx had the 99+ one for sure ! i took it apart and had it welded for rwd only but never had the ballz to try it !

Re: LSD photos and specs
if someone has a diff out can you measure the end to end length, Pinion flange diameter and number of splines? Or if someone on the East Coast has a duff one handy or one swapped from a LSD conversion let me know.
Cheers

^^^ I'm sorry but when you use the word pinion flange I tend to think of rear diffs. Pretty sure that's not where you're at though considering the theme of the thread.
Which diameter do you want, can you be more specific? I have two phase 2 center diffs out that I can measure tomorrow and count spines for you.

Re: LSD photos and specs
I'm referring to the rear diff as this has a 8 bolt flange similar to the photo. Looking at the center diff there does not seem to be a flange to bolt the pinion to. I know it's a bit of a long shot that the Subaru rear diff and the Suzuki are the same but if I remember correctly they are similar. End to end measurement is like the picture. I have full engineering shop equipment so any modification is possible.
