So what makes a phase 2 5MT different from a phase 1?

Just curious if someone can educate me on this matter. Phase 2 began with '98 model year, correct?

Most of the differences are in the tail section. Refinements to the center differential design and bearing layout, and some differences in the shaft layout (all fairly minor). The synchro design was also revised to give much smoother shifting, but the design is significantly less robust than the phase-1 synchro.

Phase 2 began in 99 or 2000 depending on the car. You can usually tell by the number of bellhousing attachment points on the engine.

Is this an accurate observation, TY752=phase 1 and TY754=phase 2? Seems to be the case as far as I can tell.

For the most part, yes. But there are TY753's as well - almost all of which I've seen are P 1. However, I'm not sure that's a hard and fast rule - I did see one that had a phase 2 center diff, so they may have been an in-between phase. I believe the 753's are only found in MY 97-98, but definitely not all 97-98's are 753's (most are 752's).
